The importance of school and community was engrained in Kyle Cherry early in life while growing up in the small town of Benton, Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences Education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1990 and taught for ten years in Midfield, Alabama; Hazel Green, Wisconsin; and Winder, Georgia before earning his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia in 2000. He worked as a middle school assistant principal in Monroe, Georgia and then as a high school assistant principal and middle school principal in Oregon, Wisconsin prior to his arrival at Houston High School in March 2009. Cherry was named to his current role as principal of HHS in 2014 with the formation of the Germantown Municipal School District.
Kyle is married to Dr. Stacey Schultz-Cherry, a research doctor at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and they have two adult sons, Sean, 26, and Nick, 23.
Mrs. Missy Abel
Missy Abel began her teaching career as a math teacher at Briarcrest in 1992 while also coaching cross country and track, and moved on to Collierville High School from 1995-2011 as a math teacher and testing advisor. She then served as District Lead Math Teacher of legacy Shelby County Schools—along with statewide positions on the STEM Leadership Council, as a math coach, and as an item writer for state assessments. She served as the STEM Advisor of the merged SCS district before joining the GMSD team. Serving in her first year as Vice Principal at Houston High School, Mrs. Abel has been the instructional supervisor for secondary education since the formation of the district in 2014.
Mrs. Abel attended Mississippi State University earning a minor in Computer Science and received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Blue Mountain College. She received her Masters of Arts in Education from Bethel University. She is married to Shawn Abel, math teacher at Houston Middle School and assistant football coach at HHS. They are thankful for their three wonderful children, Jonathan, Reagan, and Julia, and a daughter-in-law, Jennie.
At HHS, Mrs. Abel is responsible for curriculum & instruction, school counseling services, and master schedule/Skyward.
Assistant Principal- 11th Grade
Mrs. Kathryn Jones graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Memphis and also earned her Master of Science in Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Memphis. She began her educational career with Memphis City Schools and then moved to Germantown Middle School before coming to Houston in 1990. Initially she began teaching several levels of English including Honors and AP. Her move to administration occurred in 1997.
Mrs. Jones’ husband is retired from Federal Express, and they have two grown children and three grandchildren who attend Bartlett and Collierville schools. Mrs. Jones is currently the
Mrs. Jones is the 11th grade administrator responsible for substitutes, grade level discipline, and extracurricular activities.
Assistant Principal- 10th Grade
Robert LeGault II is an Assistant Principal at Houston High School and one who aspires to give our nation’s youth an ideal to strive towards. After spending roughly 17 years working in public education as a classroom teacher and school administrator throughout Shelby County, Rob knows what it takes to cultivate student performance and help people find their purpose. He is certified in teaching, school leadership, a husband to his awesome wife, and a father to two amazing girls. Rob holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Wright State University and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. His roles and responsibilities at Houston High is as follows: 10th grade administrator, Special Education Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, Alternative School Coordinator, Lockers, and Buses.
Assistant Principal- 9th Grade
Mrs. Janna Matykiewicz began her career in education in 1990 as a math teacher at Bolton High School. After teaching there for ten years, she accepted a position at Cordova High School as an assistant principal and served in that capacity for seven years. She returned to Bolton for a while as an administrator and was fortunate to be hired at Houston High School in 2014. She is so happy to be a Mustang!
Mrs. Matykiewicz’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of Memphis and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. She is married to a fantastic man and has two beautiful daughters, one handsome son, and 8 awesome grandchildren.
Mrs. Matykiewicz is the 9th grade administrator. Her responsibilities also include parking and testing.
Assistant Principal- 12th Grade
Mr. John Taylor began his career in education in 1992 as a History teacher at East High School. While at East, he coached football and baseball. After teaching at East for three years, he accepted a history teaching position at Houston, teaching both standard and AP classes. While at Houston he has coached football, wrestling, and softball. Mr. Taylor has been an Assistant Principal since 2004. His current responsibilities include the 12th grade class, attendance, and textbooks.
Mr. Taylor’s educational background includes a Bachelors of History from Rhodes College and a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. He has been married to Marje, a Special Education Teacher for Bartlett City Schools, for 21 years and has two children, Matthew (Class of 2015) and Charlotte (Class of 2018).
