Update on Houston High moving to PTO Structure

Parents, Students, Teachers and Administrators

Last year, based on feedback and input from you, the Presidents of the five GMSD Schools, along with representatives from the Germantown Council, met to investigate moving from a PTA to a PTO structure.

On Monday, February 20th, the entire HHS Board met with representatives from the State PTA and then voted unanimously to move forward in pursing this structure.

What does this means in a nutshell:

- more autonomy of the members to address issues directly impacting the GMSD schools

- no dues to state or national PTA keeping over $10K per year district-wide to benefit our respective schools

The Executive Committee of the HHS PTSA will be meeting to discuss the logistics of moving forward, and the possibility of a special-called general meeting for the purpose of a written-ballot vote to relinquish our charter with PTA and move forward with a PTO structure. It will be imperative that we have a majority of our family members present in order to have enough votes to relinquish our charter.

Your board will be working to establish a separate Tax ID number and applying for a separate 501(c)3 so that memberships and donations to the newly-established PTO and Project Graduation will continue to be tax-deductible.

There will be more information to follow, but this wouldn't have gotten this far without the input and involvement of our members.

If you have any questions, you may send them via email to hhsptsonews@yahoo.com

Best regards

Tony Porter, President

Houston High School PTSA
