The City of Germantown partners with schools for MOVERS program to foster leadership in youth
The focus of the MOVERS program is to select 24 eighth grade students (eight from Houston Middle, eight from Germantown Middle and eight from Riverdale) and give them a leadership experience that will help them as they prepare for the high school experience. 
HMS 6th graders take the co-champion title at the national chess competition
The HMS 6th grade chess team has been awarded National Co-Champion with Dalton School (New York) at the 2016 National Grade Chess Championship. Over 1,500 K-12 chess players from around the country competed at this National Championship event.  
Houston Middle earns prestigious grant for the library
Germantown, TN- December 15, 2016 – Houston Middle School received a grant today from bestselling author James Patterson to support its school library.

Congratulations to Dr. Long Long Kang and Stephen Short for a strong showing at this year's competitive All-West auditions. 
Houston Middle School receives a new space age water fountain
Last summer, Houston Middle School Assistant Principal Jessica Woody was walking through the airport and saw a water bottle filling station for the first time. “Immediately, my wheels started turning,” she laughed. As soon as she returned to school, her mission was clear, “…HMS needed one of those stations”.

GMSD is seeking teachers, parents, and community members to become mentors for our high school students under the tnAchieves program. This opportunity require a very SMALL AMOUNT of time, but make a HUGE difference in the lives of our HHS seniors. Please read the article to learn how to apply. 
GMSD seeking feedback on two calendar options
Please take a quick moment to preview two calendar options being considered by our calendar committee. On November 15th, a recommendation will be made to the school board.

HMS Principal named Tennessee's Middle School Administrator of the Year by ASCA.
Congratulations to Liz Dias and the team for being recognized again for furthering the counseling department and keeping students at the center of their priorities.  Emphasis on these social emotional skills like relationship building and character development are brought into the classroom... 
Germantown Launches Battle of the Books Statewide
Battle of the Books, a regular fixture in our GMSD libraries, is about to undergo an expansion. GMSD Head Librarian, Jennifer Mock, began the program with her students at Farmington Elementary School and it soon spread very quickly to our other schools. Battle of the Books provides librarians (or teacher sponsors) with a list of agreed upon books. 
GEF Grants at the Game
At halftime of the first HHS home game, the Germantown Education Foundation awarded $40,000 in grants to individual teachers, schools, and programs. Read the article to find out who received the grants. 
HMS Student Competes at World Yo-Yo Championship
A yo-yo-ist, as described by his father, Tyler Brooks is well on the path to becoming a professional yo-yo thrower. A strange thought until you watch him “throw” (a term used as a verb often in the world of competitive yo-yo’s).  
Purpose Statement:
In order for our students to grow academically and socially, it is the mission of Houston Middle School to engage students in meaningful learning experiences that build confidence. The role of the faculty and staff is to facilitate student learning, and together with their parents/guardians guide our students in becoming well-rounded contributors to society.
