Houston Middle continues its commitment to the house system with teacher field trips to the Ron Clark Academy.

Germantown, Tennessee--March 25, 2019--Houston Middle School is in its second year of implementing their Mustang House system based on their experience at the Ron Clark Academy. Six more teachers (Mr. Haynes, Mr. Shirley, Ms. Lang, Mrs. Spurlock, Ms. Justin and Mr. DePina) experienced this incredible professional development opportunity this past week and saw first-hand unique teaching techniques and the importance of high expectations. Congratulations to All GMSD Cheer teams on winning their National Competitions in Florida!

Germantown, Tennessee--February 10, 2019--Congratulations to All GMSD Cheer teams on winning their National Competitions in Florida!

Houston High Varsity Cheer won 2nd in the Super Varsity Division National Competition and were the World Champions for the 2nd consecutive year in the same division.

 

Houston High Junior Varsity Cheer was the national Champion in the Junior Varsity Non-Tumbling Large Division. They were 2nd in the Worlds in the same division.

 

Houston Middle School competed in the Large Junior High Division. They were named National Champions for the 4th year in a row. They were 2nd in the World School Competition.

 Riverdale brought home 4th place this year in the Junior High non-tumbling division. They competed for the first time in the Worlds Competition and placed third overall.

GMSD students walk 31,315 miles last semester--enough to walk across the state of Tennessee 63 times

Germantown, Tennessee--January 15, 2019-- Walk Across Tennessee is a team-based walking program where teams are encouraged to cumulatively walk the equivalent of the length of Tennessee (about 500 miles) over an eight-week period. The several classes at GMSD that participated in this event not only gained healthy lifestyle habits along the way, but fun physical activity prizes for classes to utilize during recess if the goal of 500 miles was met.
 
Some of these prizes included kickballs, kickball bases, footballs, jump rope, and throwing scoops with whiffle balls. The top three placing classes were even awarded bragging rights trophies.

Houston Middle School adds Nearpod to its roster of high tech tools as the school prepares for the first year of full 1:1 device deployment

Germantown, Tennessee—August 10, 2018—This year, all students in grades 6-12 have been issued a device.  As the students filed into the Houston Middle Library this summer to pick up their devices, teachers and administrators were simultaneously training staff on the use of a new lesson-delivery software.  “Nearpod, the new lesson-delivery platform, will do several things for the teachers,” explained Blended Learning Specialist Chris Cooper.  “It’s something like PowerPoint which is easy for teachers to learn and understand, but it offers several interactive features for students that go beyond the capabilities of PowerPoint,” he said. Germantown Police Department prepares GMSD teachers and school staff for active shooter situations

Germantown, Tennessee—August 3, 2018—The tragedy in Parkland, Florida last year has increased focus in school security across the country. Germantown Municipal School District, in addition to adding some new physical security features (you can read more about those here), continues to be proud to partner with the Germantown Police Department.  Through a partnership with the City of Germantown, each school has been provided with a School Resource Officer (SRO) since the district’s doors opened in 2014.  But, now, the GPD SWAT team has become an active partner as well. GMSD moves forward with security camera upgrades this summer

Germantown, Tennessee--July 2, 2018--Germantown Municipal School District is working on security upgrades over the summer.   District staff has engaged the architecture firm, Allen and Hoshall, to complete design work for the addition of security fencing and a secured entrance at Houston High School.  Principally though, the district is also using this summer as an opportunity to complete its long range goals of security camera upgrades across all five schools.  On security walks with the Germantown Police Department, district officials had previously identified where cameras needed to be placed or replaced. Germantown, Tennessee--June 14, 2018--Houston Middle STEAMed into their annual summer STEM Stangs Camp.  STEAM, in case you were wondering, is a melding of science, technology, engineering, math AND art.  Each year, the staff at GMSD arranges an excellently themed summer camp open to all Germantown students.  Campers this year spent each morning learning and making artistic messes, tie dying shirts, exploring glowing slime, growing crystal gardens, and creating bubbling lava lamps that all sparked students’ curiosity.   More +
