Germantown, Tennessee—August 10, 2018—This year, all students in grades 6-12 have been issued a device. As the students filed into the Houston Middle Library this summer to pick up their devices, teachers and administrators were simultaneously training staff on the use of a new lesson-delivery software. “Nearpod, the new lesson-delivery platform, will do several things for the teachers,” explained Blended Learning Specialist Chris Cooper. “It’s something like PowerPoint which is easy for teachers to learn and understand, but it offers several interactive features for students that go beyond the capabilities of PowerPoint,” he said.

Germantown, Tennessee—August 3, 2018—The tragedy in Parkland, Florida last year has increased focus in school security across the country. Germantown Municipal School District, in addition to adding some new physical security features (you can read more about those here), continues to be proud to partner with the Germantown Police Department. Through a partnership with the City of Germantown, each school has been provided with a School Resource Officer (SRO) since the district’s doors opened in 2014. Germantown, Tennessee--August 6, 2018--Our teachers and staff were ready for their new students on the first day of school in the Germantown Municipal School District. Parents walked students in at the elementary levels as the families were greeted by high-fives from members of the Houston High School Football, Cheerleading, and Volleyball teams. Staff at Houston Middle School were waving and cheering arrivals dressed in their house colors (HMS has a house-system similar to Harry Potter). The excitement was also present at Houston High where our Mustang Mentors were lined up to greet the ninth graders who will engage in special team building, orientation and get-to-know you games. Later this morning they will also tour the buildings and learn how to plug into school culture.

District staff has engaged the architecture firm, Allen and Hoshall, to complete design work for the addition of security fencing and a secured entrance at Houston High School. Principally though, the district is also using this summer as an opportunity to complete its long range goals of security camera upgrades across all five schools. On security walks with the Germantown Police Department, district officials had previously identified where cameras needed to be placed or replaced.
