Germantown, Tennessee--May 10, 2018--Walking into Houston Middle School mid-May for this annual event provided a sensory experience of the diversity truly found and celebrated at the school. Students and families come together to learn about the cultures of others from all over the world during this week long celebration called Days of Diversity. Students have this unique opportunity to become immersed in something different than what they’re used to.
What makes this event truly exceptional, however, is the authenticity of the food being served by HMS families hailing from several nationalities. The food tasting fair, coined “Taste of Diversity”, is part of this week-long celebration that Principal Liz Dias is very proud of.
The students celebrate Days of Diversity throughout the week beginning with a parade of flags from across the world. The following days each classroom decorates their doors in representation of a country for a contest that judges craftsmanship, creativity, and information learned and demonstrated in the design. The week culminates in the food fair, art show, and several multi-cultural student performances.
This is the fourth year that Dias and her staff have celebrated Days of Diversity and it seems to grow each year. In addition to displaying the multi-cultural talents of Houston Middle students, the public event also invites students from all GMSD schools to participate.
