St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is one of the best in the entire world, and we are so fortunate in Germantown to have it mere minutes down the road. This past fall, Houston High senior Ellen Suchomel joined the St. Jude family when she was unfortunately diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer in the muscles, and became a patient at the hospital.
While Ellen was fighting the most difficult of battles, Houston High SGA decided to plan a little battle of their own in support of her. Spearheaded by Sam Haddow and Anna-Cate Kramer, the group organized a “battle of the bands” event, where student musical groups and soloists could showcase their phenomenal talents in a competition dubbed “Battle for Ellen”.
On March 22nd, over a hundred students, parents,
and faculty enjoyed a sort of local Levitt Shell with an outdoor presentation of
these bands. People grabbed a popsicle or kabob from one of the local food
trucks present and listened to the live music on picnic blankets spread out on
the turf field.
Fans then voted by placing dollars in their favorite band’s jar, with all the proceeds benefitting St. Jude, and Lydia Waldrup (Soloist) and Stereotypes (band) were declared the winners.
Continuing in the evenings specialness, the celebration of music was also one of triumph, as the event coincidentally fell on Ellen’s last day of radiation, and students were able to further the excitement by sharing with her that the event raised $2,142 for St. Jude in her honor.
If you are interested in further supporting Ellen and the
fantastic work being done at St. Jude, Battle for Ellen T-shirts are still
available for purchase through the Houston High School SGA or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
