Riverdale student along with senior citizen take the top honor in Memphis Intergenerational Spelling Bee

Germantown, Tennessee--November 15, 2019--Scrumptiously—it’s a word that may come to mind this time of year as we think about how our favorite holiday meals are prepared. It’s also the word that Emaline Hagan, a third-grader at Riverdale Elementary, spelled correctly to clench the Memphis district championship at the Tennessee Healthcare Association Spelling Bee held Wednesday, November 13th, at the Memphis Jewish Home.

The bee is an annual event that pairs local third- through sixth-grade students with residents from senior living communities in the Memphis metropolitan area. Emaline was paired with Mrs. Jeanette Cooley from The Village at Germantown during the first round of competition held on November 5th.

Hagan and Cooley took first place in the Germantown event and went on to compete with seven new teams Wednesday, where they beat out representatives from five other senior living communities and elementary schools. Emaline received the top prize package, which included a first-place medal and trophy and a check for $300 awarded to Riverdale.
