Houston celebrates world culture at International Extravaganza

This past April 13th, Houston High School celebrated its International Extravaganza, an event designed to celebrate cultures around the globe, as well as the cultures right around Houston High’s hallways. This incredible event included performances representing a wide range of countries and delicious snacks and such from across the world.

The show, hosted this year by senior Jordan Vertison Hardy, included German folk dancing, stunning vocal performances, a swing-dancing demonstration, some saucy samba-ing, a decade dance, and more.

At intermission, audience members were lured to the cafeteria by the fantastic aromas emitting from a diverse array of decorated booths with delicious eats. Some favorites of the food included savory samosas, warm dumplings, wedding cookies, jollof rice, delicate tiramisu, bubble tea, and French madelines. There was also free henna demonstrations available.

The night then culminated in a dazzling display of world fashion, where students rocked the runway in traditional dress from a diverse selection of countries. These amazing students brought audience members to their feet, truly exemplifying the celebratory nature of the night.

“I loved eating food from all the different cultures and learning about the different back rounds. It was a really enlightening evening.” said student and performer, Joy Adeyemo. Joy participated in the all-girl k-pop routine and the performance of the “Francophone”, a traditional African dance. “But my favorite part was when Jordan surprised us with a Single Ladies dance!”

Apparently, host Jordan Vertison Hardy injected a little mainstream culture into the festivities with a hilariously fun Beyonce rendition. Such shenanigans, as well as the yummy snacks and stunning performances, helped make this year’s International Extravaganza such an amazing success. A special thanks to everyone involved for making Houston such a special place to be.
