At GMSD, we like to think everyone is shooting for the stars, but this past week two students have done so quite literally. Houston trap team members Lauren Thomas and Matt Mitchell were named to the 2017 Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation & NRA Competitive Shooting Sports All Scholastic Team for their achievements in both trap shooting and the classroom.
This prestige is granted only to students who have succeeded in getting, at minimum, a 3.0 GPA and shooting an average 95 or better in competition. The honor is also only awarded to 30 students in the entire state, and we at GMSD are especially honored to have two of them in our schools.
Mark Mitchell, a Houston High Trap coach, says this of their achievement, “It is another example that GMSD provides not only the opportunity to succeed in academics but sports as well. We may very well see these young athletes in the future as Olympians.”
We at GMSD are incredibly pleased that Lauren and Matt have worked so exceedingly hard in both the areas of academia and athleticism, truly exemplifying what it means to be a well-rounded GMSD student. We wish them a congratulations and look forward to seeing what goals they shoot at next.
