They are a nurturing shoulder to cry on. They understand the difficulties of choosing colleges and classes. They help students with school, friends, college, and everything in between. They are our counselors.
At GMSD we are blessed to have many incredible counselors, but recently one of them was honored with the West Tennessee Counselor of the Year Award: Ms. Carla Christian.
Ms. Christian is one of the outstanding counselors at Houston Middle School. She helped pioneer Houston Middle School's mission to meet the standards set by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), and helped Houston become the first middle school to meet these standards in academia, career development, attendance, behavioral and social goals, pre/post assessments, and school data.
Because of this exemplary school and guidance accomplishment led by Ms. Christian, Houston Middle was also awarded the RAMP certification by ASCA. Ms. Christian has also gone even beyond these national standards to implementing even more programs, like the Career and College Expo with over 50 different vendors, to further prepare HMS students for their future in high school and beyond.
Ms. Christian does so much to make Houston Middle a safe and educational place to be, and GMSD is so proud all of these endless efforts are finally being recognized by her winning of West Tennessee Counselor of the Year.
However, despite her apparent deserving of this award, Ms. Christian remains incredibly humble.
She says this of the achievement, "This award is very meaningful to me, but really represents a team effort with the other co counselors and administration."
Ms. Christian will be honored for being West Tennessee Counselor of the Year at a special local ceremony and then later attend a national counseling conference in New Orleans this July for her work.
Ms. Christian truly exemplifies all that it means to be a great staff member and great counselor, and everyone at GMSD is incredibly thrilled for both her fantastic work and amazing award. Congratulations Ms. Christian!
