GMSD is proud to claim all four STATE winning cheer teams

Some of the most exceptional athletes at GMSD are part of our nationally-recognized cheerleading squads. Programs at the middle and high school levels constantly push these girls to become highly competitive athletes.  Similar to Olympic gymnasts, these girls have sacrificed months and years practicing tumbling and stunting. The level of dedication of our cheerleaders on all four GMSD squads was rewarded with first place recognitions in their individual divisions at state.

Riverdale Middle School cheer competed for the first time at the state competition in their history and made quite the entrance. After extensive preparation, the girls arrived in Murfeesburo for their competitive debut in the Junior High Non-Tumbling Division. Riverdale was awarded first place, which grants the squad a spot to compete at the national level in Orlando, Florida this upcoming February.

The success continues with the cheerleaders of Houston Middle, but, with ten national championship titles on record, the HMS squad is no stranger to the trials of the state level. The squad of 29 puts in endless hours perfecting their routines. They competed in the TSSAA State Cheer Championship as well, but in the West Tennessee Sectional Competition of the Large Junior High division.  The Houston Middle Squad also won first place. The team is now eligible to compete in both the National and World School Cheer Competition in Orlando.
Sponsor Betsy Spurlock said,” We are looking forward to representing Houston Middle, GMSD, and the city of Germantown as we move on to the next competitions.”

Houston High School Cheer also has a tradition of success, and performed fantastically over the weekend at state. Houston High School has two competitive teams, the tumbling and non-tumbling squads. The Varsity Cheer Squad (tumbling), already regional champs, won first place in the Super Varsity Division at state, giving them a bid for Nationals in two divisions.

The non-tumbling squad also earned top scores in the state in the JV non-tumbling division. These incredible athletes will also have the opportunity to compete at the national level alongside their fellow mustangs.
