HMS academies serve local seniors at Brookdale Center

Our senior citizens often impart the best wisdom regarding life, history, and everything in between. The students at Houston Middle School know this all too well. Members of the National Junior Honor Society have been regularly volunteering with the elderly at the Brookdale Senior Center.

Several times a year this club dedicated to both academic excellence and community service follows the lead of Asst. Principal Jessica Woody, Counselor Carla Christian, and devoted teachers Andrea Starks and Jeanette Taylor to the local senior center. There, students engage with the seniors, often working with them on creating some sort of craft. On their most recent excursion, the students and seniors created autumnal wreaths to decorate the patron’s doors during this fall season.

Seniors and students alike enjoy this fantastic exchange of friendship, evidenced by the two high-schoolers who so loved the experience in middle school that they asked to tag along.

“I think it is a great idea for kids to hang out with seniors.” said Jessica Woody, “They can learn so much about kindness and patience just from mere conversation.”

We are beyond pleased that our students are taking the time to serve and engage with the elderly in our community and hope they have a fantastic year in building these mutually beneficial relationships.
