TN Middle School Counselor of the Year Award goes to HMS's Carla Christian

GMSD is fortunate to have many incredible counselors who dedicate themselves daily to serving in the best interests of our students. Recently, one of these remarkable professionals was honored by the Tennessee School Counselor Association and was presented with the Middle School Counselor of the Year Award: Ms. Carla Christian.

Ms. Christian is an outstanding counselor at Houston Middle School. She helped pioneer Houston Middle School's mission to meet the standards set by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), and helped Houston become the first middle school to meet these standards in academia, career development, attendance, behavioral and social goals, pre/post assessments, and school data.

Because of this exemplary school and guidance accomplishment led by Ms. Christian, Houston Middle was also awarded the RAMP Award by ASCA. In addition, Ms. Christian has gone even beyond these national standards to implement even more programs, like the Career and College Expo with over 50 different vendors, that further prepare HMS students for their future in high school and beyond.

“She works tirelessly to advocate and make sure that all her students and parents get the support they need in both academics and behavioral intervention support.” said Mrs. Christy Law, who oversees the district’s counseling staff, of Ms. Christian

Ms. Christian does so much to make Houston Middle a safe and educational place to be, and GMSD is so proud that all of these endless efforts are finally being recognized by her winning of Middle School Counselor of the Year for the entire state. She truly exemplifies all that it means to be a great staff member and counselor, and everyone at GMSD is incredibly thrilled for both her fantastic work and amazing award.
