HHS athletes dominate Commercial Appeal All-Metro teams

While the fall athletic season has long since drawn to a close, recognition for these teams and their outstanding players is just beginning. Every year the Commercial Appeal aims to honor the very best across the greater Memphis area in high school athletics through a special ceremony dubbed the Sports Awards. The Commercial Appeal selects only the most dedicated of athletes to be represented on first and second All-Metro teams and as nominees in the prestigious Player of the Year category. We are proud to announce Houston High had fourteen students selected in these highly competitive groupings.

Six members of the girls’ soccer team are among the selected few, making how they accomplished an undefeated season incredibly clear. Juniors Jenna Kemp (Midfielder) and Cara Young (Defender) are both first team All-Metro and nominated to be Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year, each with All South Region and All American honors under their belts already. Midfielder Adryan Darnell and Forward Abbie Rushwin join them, also named to the first All-Metro team, and their teammates Emma Gruggett (Midfielder) and Molly Rose (Defender) to the second All-Metro team.

A standout on the boys’ soccer team, Nick Anewalt punted his way this year onto the All-Metro football first team, averaging 39.1 per kick.

From our fantastic cross country team, sisters Anna and Lydia Tankersley were both named to the first team All-Metro and nominated to be Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year for their respective achievements at a number of regional and state meets throughout the season, and Bradley Turner, with a first place win at the West Tennessee Championships this season, is nominated to be Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year and a member of the boys’ first team All-Metro.

Volleyball’s Kalea Davis performed wonderfully all season long, especially at the AAA state tournament, which effectively earned her a spot on the first team All-Metro and a nomination for Volleyball Player of the Year. Teammate and utility Madison Weir was named to the second All-Metro team.

Our highly-regarded golf team rounds out this year’s nominees and team honorees with Jayna Choi as a first All-Metro team member and Girls’ Golfer of the Year nominee, Baili Park as a second girls’ All Metro team member, and King Grisanti as a second boys’ golf All-Metro team member.
