Diego Martinez to represent Tennessee in Honor Orchestra of America
Diego Martinez, a senior at Houston High School in Germantown, TN, will join other outstanding musicians from across the nation as part of Music for All’s 2018 Honor Orchestra of America. Diego was selected from numerous applicants for membership in this prestigious honor ensemble. He is the son of Dr. Felix Martinez and Sylvia Miranda. Diego is a member of the Houston High School Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Long Long Kang. Diego plays double bass and was selected as a member of the Honor Orchestra of America by audition. The Honor Orchestra of America is recognized as one of the finest scholastic ensembles in America. They will rehearse and perform in concert as part of the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, March 15-17 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Honor Orchestra of America students come from 22 states representing 55 high schools, and will perform in concert at 8:00 p.m. on March 16 and 17. On Friday they will perform at Clowes Memorial Hall and the Jazz Band of America will close the concert. On Saturday the Honor Orchestra of America will perform at Schrott Center for the Performing Arts on the Butler University campus.
Diego has been a member of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program for 5 years, being principal bass during the last few years; he also was a member of the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra where he had the opportunity of traveling to Austria, Germany and performing at the renowned KKL in Lucerne, Switzerland. Diego has been selected for All West TN for 6 years, wining 1st chair 5 years in a row, he also earned participation in All State 3 years playing 1st chair 2 years in a row, and All National Symphony Orchestra. He had the honor of playing as Principal Chair for the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Arts Camp in 2017. Diego will pursue a career in Music Performance during the fall of 2018. Larry J. Livingston will conduct the 2018 Honor Orchestra of America. Livingston is the Chairman of the Conducting Department at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
The 2018 Honor Orchestra of America will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s Percussion of the Nobles and three movements of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5 in D minor, Op. 47.
“To be selected from among their peers for membership in this national ensemble is a great achievement and honor,” says Debbie Laferty Asbill, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Music for All. “The 2018 Jazz Band of America members are ambassadors of America’s music programs, as well as their states, schools and communities.”
The Music for All National Festival includes the National Concert Band Festival, the Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival, the Chamber Music National Festival, the Orchestra America National Festival, and the inaugural National Choir Festival, all taking place simultaneously in major venues throughout Indianapolis. The Festival includes performances by 71 high school and middle school ensembles from across America in addition to the Jazz Band of America, Honor Band of America, and the Honor Orchestra of America. In its 27th year, the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, is an annual program of Music for All, one of the nation’s largest and most influential organizations in support of active music making, headquartered in Indianapolis.
