Casting Call! My Teacher Has Superpowers

Germantown Education Commission Awards the January Teacher of the Month

Mary Loyd, fifth-grade math teacher at Riverdale School, was selected for Germantown’s Teacher of the Month by the Germantown Education Commission. Ms. Loyd was chosen for her reputation for helping all students, even those who struggle with math, to develop a love for the subject. See the full story here.

GMSD Parent Training Workshop

The focus of this parent workshop is “Tools for Changing Behavior.” Sessions will be based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Strategies will be explained, modeled and role-played throughout the sessions that can be applied in the home, community, and school settings. Read more here.

HHS robotics team competes at the VEX Robotics competition

Houston High STEM students competed in a Robotics competition over the weekend. HHS brought 2 teams with a total of 7 students. There were 23 total teams from other schools, most being from the Memphis area, but there were also teams from Arkansas and from the Nashville area. See the full article here.


Houston High Fine Arts Presents 42nd Street

Houston High School's Fine Arts Department Presents 42nd Street, February 17 to 20, in the Houston High School Auditorium. A classic Broadway fairy tale, 42nd Street tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway. For more information click here


GMSD Schools Celebrate Board Members  

GMSD celebrated its school board last week for school board appreciation week by assigning each school a board member for the day. Each school chose a way to thank its school board member and let them know how appreciative the district is. Read the full story here.

HHS all-metro player-of-the-year semifinalists
Nine of HHS’s athletes were honored as semifinalists for the Greater Memphis area by The Commercial Appeal Sports Awards. Houston has one from girls golf (Jayna Choi), four from cross country (Ella Baran, Michelle Myers, Christopher Rayder, Anna Tankersley), three from girls soccer (Paola Ellis, Jenna Kemp, Katrina Ostrom), and one athlete from girls volleyball (KaLea Davis). Community Conversations “Increasing Employable Outcomes for Individuals with Disabilities

Houston High School and Baptist Women’s Hospital have an important partnership that is changing the lives of students with disabilities. HHS special education students recently worked at the hospital, which was featured in the Commercial Appeal and WREG. Read the full story here.
HMS trap team takes home the state championship title

At the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State Championship Trap Tournament, Houston High School's middle school division of the trap team won 1st place in the Intermediate Entry Level Squad division and claimed the State Championship title. “IE” means these kids are not in high school, and it's their first year to compete on a trap team. Band students break All-West records for GMSD

HHS HOSA takes home over 50 victories at regional competition

HHS’s HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) members recently competed in the regional competition, which took place at Union University. HOSA’s mission is to “provide knowledge, skill, and leadership development” for all health science students in order deliver quality health care. Click here to read the full story.   


4th grader at Farmington publishes her own book

Farmington fourth grader Autumn Cooley submitted an essay to win a lunch with guest author Nathan Hale. Winning the contest, Colley took full advantage of her time with Hale. Click here to read the full story.

The City of Germantown partners with schools for MOVERS program to foster leadership in youth

The focus of the MOVERS program is to select 24 eighth grade students (eight from Houston Middle, eight from Germantown Middle and eight from Riverdale) and give them a leadership experience that will help them as they prepare for the high school experience. Click here to read the full story. 


HHS Choirs hosting English composer Will Todd in a residency

The Houston High School Choirs of Germantown, TN will be hosting English composer and conductor, Will Todd, in a brief residency on January 23 and 24, 2017. The residency will include a choral reading session for middle and high school choral directors as well as local church musicians on Monday evening at HHS. Click here to find out more. 


GMSD central office works to break barriers in Memphis

Over the Christmas break, 14 GMSD central office employees dedicated half of their day to giving back to Memphis. Lead by Elissa Stratton, director of human resources at GMSD, the group split up and went to the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen and MIFA Meals on Wheels. Click here to read the full story.



Germantown Education Commission awards teacher of the month

The Germantown Education Commission presented the December 2016 Teacher of the Month award to Dr. Melissa Ducey who is the Ione physics teacher at Houston High School. HMS 6th graders take the co-champion title at the national chess competition

The HMS 6th grade chess team has been awarded National Co-Champion with Dalton School (New York) at the 2016 National Grade Chess Championship. Over 1,500 K-12 chess players from around the country competed at this National Championship event. Click here to read the full story.
