EXCELLENT ACADEMICS

DOGWOOD’S MORGAN GROW NAMED GERMANTOWN’S TEACHER OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER BY EDUCATION COMMISSION

 

 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 16, 2017—Morgan Grow is a third grade science and social studies teacher at Dogwood Elementary School, where she encourages students to develop of a love of learning. She is loved and respected by her students because she teaches them so much more than academics – she helps them learn how to be their best. Ms. Grow is the sponsor of the Dogwood Environmental Club, where she helps Dogwood students and their families explore and understand the natural world around the school and in their neighborhoods. The Environmental Club has enhanced the learning opportunities for all Dogwood students by creating a butterfly garden on campus and monitoring families of bluebirds that live on the Dogwood campus. She also started the successful Dogwood recycling program.

Germantown, Tennessee—November 16, 2017— Germantown Municipal School District invites the Germantown community to tour the facilities and programs at Houston High School.  On February 7th, 2018, the students and teachers at the school will showcase several of the award winning features of a true local treasure.  For three consecutive years, Germantown Municipal Schools has earned the highest ACT average in the state of Tennessee.  Beyond test scores, the student life programming at Houston High School is incredibly diverse and successful in both state and national competitions.  Delving even further into the school culture, there are incredible opportunities for all student interests.

CALLING ALL HOUSTON HIGH STUDENTS—IT’S TIME TO GEAR UP FOR BATTLE OF THE BRAINS 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 10, 2017—Students from across Germantown will compete in the Battle of the Brains on Saturday, February 3. The event takes place in the Houston High School auditorium lobby, from 9 a.m. to noon. The public is encouraged to stop in, take a look and ask questions about projects on topics including rooftop agriculture, password protection, healing wounds with differential calculus, robotics and more. Students from Germantown, Houston and White Station High Schools and Memphis University School will compete.

APPLICATIONS FOR GERMANTOWN HOLIDAY PARADE ENTRIES DUE ON NOVEMBER 27

Germantown, Tennessee—November 9, 2017—Mark your calendars for the 2017 Germantown Holiday Parade on December 9th at 2pm. As always, we are seeking as many groups as possible to represent GMSD in the annual event.  If you are interested, please download the application here.  You can submit your application to Kate Crowder via email or Germantown Parks and Rec. If you have already filled out your application and submitted to Germantown Parks and Rec, please let us know via email.  Applications are due on Tuesday, November 28th.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, MONDAY (NOV. 20)

Germantown, Tennessee—November 20, 2017— The agenda can be viewed here. The Houston High School Girls Golf Team was recognized for their recent state championship win.  The Houston Middle School Cross Country Team was also recognized for their state championship win.

Germantown, Tennessee—November 17, 2017—Student designers will be unveiling masterpieces of their own right here in Germantown. Houston High’s Fashion Design class’s ecommerce store online is NOW OPEN, offering the clothing they produce in class for purchase. Entitled Designing Houston, the website-in-progress will feature a variety of upcycled and hand-sewn clothes, all created entirely by the high schooler designers.

EXCELLENT ATHLETICS

AWE INSPIRING IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRULY DESCRIBE IT:  RECAPPING THE FALL ATHLETIC SEASON AT HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 16, 2017— It has been another exemplary season for our athletic program. This year our athletes brought home an impressive list of accomplishments; two State Championships, one State Runner-Up, and five Region Championships. All seven TSSAA fall athletic teams earned berths in the State Playoffs. But, in reflecting on the fall season, the most impressive fact is that Houston High School athletes consistently perform at these levels.

GMSD IS PROUD TO CLAIM ALL FOUR STATE WINNING CHEER TEAMS

 

 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 14, 2017— Some of the most exceptional athletes at GMSD are part of our nationally-recognized cheerleading squads. Programs at the middle and high school levels constantly push these girls to become highly competitive athletes.  Similar to Olympic gymnasts, these girls have sacrificed months and years practicing tumbling and stunting. The level of dedication of our cheerleaders on all four GMSD squads was rewarded with first place recognitions in their individual divisions at state.

Germantown, Tennessee—November 17, 2017— Walk Across Tennessee is a team-based walking program in which teams are encouraged to cumulatively walk the equivalent of the length of Tennessee (about 500 miles) or more, over an eight-week period. Team members do not have to walk together. Some may prefer to walk outside, while others walk on a treadmill.  “Or, in the case of an elementary school classroom they can engage in other healthy activities like kickball or GoNoodle,” according to Coordinator of Coordinated School Health Brian Fisher.  Congratulations to school winners; Katie Faught, Cassidy Van Voorst, and Ashley Banks.

GMSD HOLIDAY CONCERTS ARE SURE TO LIGHT UP YOUR SEASON

 

 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 17, 2017— One of the most celebrated elements of the holidays is the music that accompanies it. From classically beautiful pieces like “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies” to more modern carols like “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, these songs of the season provide so much joy to our days, and several are being showcased throughout GMSD by phenomenal student musicians who range in age from elementary to high school. We hope you will come out and enjoy one or many of the holiday concerts being offered this year.

Germantown, Tennessee—November 20, 2017—Falcon Footlights (Farmington Elementary, Dogwood Elementary, and Houston Middle School) put on a fun show over the weekend. Madagascar Jr. was a smash success.

TN MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES TO CARLA CHRISTIAN

Germantown, Tennessee—November 15, 2017— GMSD is fortunate to have many incredible counselors who dedicate themselves daily to serving in the best interests of our students. Recently, one of these remarkable professionals was honored by the Tennessee School Counselor Association and was presented with the Middle School Counselor of the Year Award: Ms. Carla Christian.

TSBA NAMES BONNIE LEE STATEWIDE WINNER OF VOLUNTEER AWARD

 

 

Nashville, Tennessee—November 5, 2017— During its annual convention each year, the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) honors a school volunteer who has distinguished herself/himself by demonstrating exceptional commitment to volunteerism in a local school district; exhibited leadership, creativity, cooperation, and hard work in their service to a school; engaged in the creation, organization and or mobilization of volunteers; demonstrated sustained commitment to meeting the district’s needs and helped with a special project or ongoing activities. The 2017 winner of the TSBA School Volunteer Recognition Award is Bonnie Lee of Germantown, Tennessee.

HOUSTON HIGH SGA STUDENTS SPREAD THE SPOOKY SPIRIT TO BINGHAMPTON THROUGH TRICK OR TRUNK EVENT

 

 

Germantown, Tennessee—October 31, 2017— As we move into November, we continue to stuff our bellies with the candy spoils of Halloween past. These trick-or-treating triumphs are readily available here in Germantown, but this is unfortunately not the case all across Memphis. Houston High SGA tried to help meet this candy crisis this past Sunday by providing a fun Trick-or-Trunk experience to kids in the Binghampton area.

HOUSTON MIDDLE STUDENTS SERVE LOCAL SENIOR CITIZENS 

Germantown, Tennessee—November 11, 2017— Our senior citizens often impart the best wisdom regarding life, history, and everything in between. The students at Houston Middle School know this all too well. Members of the National Junior Honor Society have been regularly volunteering with the elderly at the Brookdale Senior Center.

THOUSANDS OF MID-SOUTHERNERS WELCOMED THE SEASON WITH THE GERMANTOWN OKTOBERFEST

Germantown, Tennessee—November 6, 2017— Thousands of Mid-Southerners welcomed the season with a German-themed festival. The inaugural Germantown Oktoberfest was held Nov. 4 at the Germantown Civic Club Complex. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Germantown Education Foundation, which supports the five public schools in the Germantown Municipal School District.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR VESTA HOME SHOW--BENEFITTING THE SCHOOLS

Driving around Germantown during the holiday season is always a wonderful time, with houses decorated fantastically and streets aglow with twinkling lights. Excitingly, this year some of these local homes will be even more beautiful than the norm, thanks to the Vesta Home Show.

STUDENTS ACROSS THE DISTRICT SALUTE OUR SOLDIERS DURING VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLIES AND PARADES

 

 

For the third year in a row, Dogwood Elementary’s choir and music teacher, Peter Simons, along with the entire student body and PTA hosted a Veterans Day reception, parade, and program. On Friday, November 10th, veterans from Dogwood families were invited to be honored. Approximately 120 veterans attended—the highest number of honorees the school has ever seen.
