Course Descriptions

Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is made up of approximately 60 members and is established through auditions at the end of the marching season.  This band serves as a feeder group for the Wind Ensemble. A high level of band literature is performed. The Symphonic Band presents several concerts each year and takes a trip each spring to participate in national competitions. The Symphonic Band is under the direction of Matt Taylor.
Jazz Band
There are two Jazz Bands at Houston High. One is comprised of about 20 members and the other around 30 students. This is a separate class from the other bands. Students must be involved in a regular band class to participate. The Jazz Bands play for school functions, at band concerts and travel with the band on the spring trip each year. The Jazz Bands are under the direction of Jim Smith and Matt Taylor.
Battery Percussion
This course functions as part of both the marching and concert band programs. Percussionists will focus on playing the snare, tenor, and bass drums or cymbals.
Mallet Percussion
This course functions as part of both the marching and concert band program. Percussionists will focus on playing the xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, bells, and timpani. 
General Music
General Music is a comprehensive study of music from an academic standpoint. It includes theory, history, technology, composing, and arranging various types of music. Students will study a wide range of genres including classical, jazz, opera, as well as current music. Curriculum will follow the state standards and objectives for general music.


About Me

About Me

Matt Taylor serves as assistant band director at Houston High School.  Prior to his current position, he served as director of bands at Cordova High School. While at Cordova, the band won many class championships and division championships at many contests. The wind ensemble received superior ratings at concert festival. He has also been a member of the instructional staff at Arlington High School,serving as arranger, visual technician, and music instructor. He also has experience teaching middle school band and choir at Woodstock Middle School and Millington Middle School.  Mr. Taylor graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Music Education.


Mr. Taylor studied wind conducting under Dr. Nicholas Holland, Dr. Kraig Williams, and Dr. Sidney McKay. While in college, Mr. Taylor also studied trumpet pedagogy with Dr. David Spencer. He has performed internationally in Marktoberdorf, Germany and Salzburg, Austria.  He also served as trumpet section leader for the Mighty Sound of the South. He is an active consultant, clinician, and arranger in the Mid-South Region. He is a member of WTSBOA and NAfME.


Mr. Taylor currently lives in Bartlett, Tn with his beautiful wife, Rachel. They are the proud doggy parents of Henry the Boston Terrier and Walt the Beagle.
