GMSD Athletic Excellence

At all levels, GMSD is known for excellence in athletics. Beginning at the elementary level, students can participate in competitive sports, with our Dogwood elementary girls cross country team holding a record in the state. As those students move into middle school, Houston Middle and Riverdale K-8 provides the groundwork that is required to show students the determination they need to continue competing at Houston High School. GMSD works to ensure that our student athletes are not only in peak physical condition for their sport, but also that they learn how to show good sportsmanship and always be there for their teammates. As HHS, HMS, and Riverdale all introduce new sports this year, we cannot wait to continue our athletic excellence and helping student athletes to become their very best, both on and off the field.

Houston High School's legacy includes over 100 state championships, with many student athletes advancing to Division I programs at school like Vanderbilt, UT Knox, Memphis, Kansas, State, and many more.

Required Forms

GMSD Forms

For all GMSD student athletes, an in date physical is required for all athletic participation, including tryouts. Student athletes and their families may be required to complete additional paperwork such as Medical Treatment Consent, Concussion protocol, Participation Waiver, etc. Families will be instructed on what additional paperwork is required at what times.

Our Facilities

Bill Avant Field

9755 Wolf River Blvd

The Houston High School baseball field is located at the back on the HHS campus behind the football stadium. Bill Avant Field also house a full baseball facility that includes a full locker room and turf room. During football season, this locker room serves as the visiting team locker room. Both JV Baseball and Varsity Baseball use this field, and HHS hosts many baseball tournaments here as well.

HHS Softball Complex

The Houston High School Softball Complex, also located at the back of the HHS campus, was opened in May of 2023, and it serves of JV and Varsity Softball teams.

Landers Ford Stadium

Houston High School is home to Landers Ford Stadium, that houses the Principal Toyota turf field and our six lane track. Our football stadium comes to life in August when we kickoff football season, and it stays busy year round. Landers Ford Stadium is home to Freshman, JV, and Varsity Football, Freshman, JV, and Varsity Boys and Girls Lacrosse, and Riverdale, HMS, and HHS Track & Field.

HHS Varsity Gym

HHS is home to two gymnasiums, and our Varsity Gym hosts a multitude of games and tournaments each year. Our Varsity Gym serves Freshman, JV, and Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball, Freshman, JV, and Varsity Girls Volleyball, and Varsity Wrestling. This gym is also home to many special events including GMSD's Cheer Show Night, HHS pep rallies, and our fall and spring signing day events.

HHS Practice Gym

Houston High School's secondary gym, often referred to as the P.E. or Practice Gym, hosts several tournaments a year and serves as a practice space for Freshman, JV, and Varsity Wrestling, as well JV and Varsity Cheer.

TMSAA & TSSAA Directories

Student athletes across GMSD participate in TMSAA and TSSAA, but not every sport in GMSD is affiliated with TMSAA or TSSAA. Coaching information is regularly updated for both TMSAA and TSSAA sports.

HHS Sports Marketing Club

Houston Sports Marketing gives students hands-on experience in photography, social media, and broadcasting, all while promoting our school’s athletic teams. As a member of the HHS Sports Marketing club, students are given the unique opportunity to be on the sideline for some of our school's biggest events. Our team captures sideline photos, previews upcoming matchups through pregame shows, highlights standout athletes on social media, and manages live-streams for athletic events. Students receive training and access to some of the highest quality equipment, including cameras, microphones, and more. For students who have a passion for sports and promoting our athletes across the district, this is the club for you! Be sure to lookout for it at the 2025-2026 Club Fair at HHS.
