What happens when weather gets in the way of the school day?
Snow and ice may get most of the attention, but severe storms, flooding, extreme temperatures and other conditions can also affect school operations. When weather could create unsafe conditions, GMSD monitors the situation and determines whether changes to the school day are necessary.
Our goal is simple: make the safest decision we can with the best information available and give families as much notice as possible.
How Does GMSD Make the Call?
Weather decisions aren't based on a single forecast, neighborhood or road.
Depending on the situation, district leaders may consider:
- Current and forecasted weather conditions
- Road and travel conditions
- Conditions at school campuses, parking lots and walkways
- The timing of weather during arrival and dismissal
- Transportation and bus operations
- Power or utility concerns
- Information from local emergency and public safety partners
Our operations team also prepares campuses when possible. Plant managers may arrive early to inspect walkways and other areas, apply de-icer and restrict access to areas that cannot be safely used.
Athletics and After-School Activities?
A change to the instructional day may also affect transportation, practices, games, performances, clubs, child care and other activities.
When those plans are affected, GMSD or your school will communicate additional information to participating families.
Don't assume an evening event is canceled simply because weather affected the school day unless GMSD or the school confirms it.
