Communications Internships

Lead at the District Level

The GMSD Internship Program offers high school juniors and seniors a unique, paid opportunity to explore careers in marketing, communications, and digital media. Each year, six students are selected through a competitive interview process to join the GMSD Communications Department. Interns work at the district office with a flexible schedule, gaining hands-on experience in social media management, videography, photography, journalism, graphic design, office management, and more.

Lindsey Baker

GMSD Communications Intern

Lindsey Baker is a high-achieving student with a 4.583 GPA and a passion for leadership, service, and athletics. She is the Co-Founder of Houston’s Youth in Government Club, President of National Beta Club, and a leader in Model UN, Community Service Club, and Mock Trial, also serving as a GMSD Ambassador. Lindsey has earned top honors including the Tulane Book Award, Outstanding Statesperson at TriStar Youth in Government, and Best Delegate at Mid-South Model UN. Her service includes work with 901 POP (Petals of Purpose), Project Omega tutoring, and the 30+ ACT Service Club. On the court, she is a standout varsity volleyball player, recognized on the AVCA Phenom Watch List and the 2024 All Sectional Team. Lindsey is a senior at HHS and will graduate in May 2026.

 

Rachel Yan

Rachel is a dynamic student who blends academic excellence with leadership and community engagement. She is the Co-Founder of Artflow, where she manages projects, enhances brand awareness, and introduces creative activities to her school community. Rachel also serves as an officer for Aylus, coordinating volunteer initiatives and planning events that make a difference in Memphis. Her professional experience includes an internship at the McCullough Law Firm, where she conducted legal research, supported attorneys, and honed her organizational skills, as well as serving as a church camp counselor who guided and supported young campers. With her adaptability, problem-solving, and passion for service, Rachel brings both creativity and professionalism to our team. Rachel is one of only a handful of juniors selected to be a part of the internship program this year.

 

Sarah Pennington

Sarah Pennington is a dedicated student with an impressive GPA and a passion for leadership and the arts. She is a member of the Honors Academy and Tri-M Music Honor Society, promoting musicianship, service, and personal growth. Outside the classroom, Sarah volunteers with Germantown Community Theatre as an actor, crew member, and teachers’ assistant for summer camps, keeping groups of 30 children focused and inspired each day. A talented trombonist with five years of study, she now serves as Houston Band President-Elect (2025–2027). With her creativity, reliability, and heart for service, Sarah is a standout member of our GMSD Intern group. Sarah was also one of the few juniors selected to be a part of the internship program this year.

 

Spencer Malahy

Spencer Malahy is a dedicated student with a passion for theatre, service, and creativity. She has served as a teaching assistant at Germantown Community Theatre, guiding young performers through summer camps, and volunteers with the Grace Hill Church Kids Ministry, where she helps teach lessons, supports children with special needs, and prepares learning spaces. As a student at Rivedale, Spencer helped create and manage the social media for Raider Theater, an endeavor that she still helps with as an HHS student. Spencer’s wide-ranging talents and her commitment to lifting up those around her make her a true asset to every team she joins. Spencer joins our team as a junior this year.

Terrance is both a proactive and community-focused student with proven experience in leadership and volunteerism. In past summers, he has served as a counselor at Camp Conquest, an overnight camp for individuals with special needs, and at the Memphis Jewish Community Center where he was trained in leadership and supervision of young campers. At Houston High, Terrance is heavily involved in the Student Government Association. Terrance currently serves as President of SGA and last year he served as Junior Vice President, helping to shape school events and communications. His skills include leadership, creativity, digital management and public speaking, making him a valuable asset to any team. This is his second year as a GMSD Intern, and he will graduate in May 2026.

 

Will Turman

Will Turman is a hardworking student whose leadership and service span academics, athletics, and the arts. A member of the Houston High School Honors Academy, he balances rigorous coursework with meaningful commitments in and out of school. Will has volunteered over 500 hours with various organizations. Currently he works at the YMCA, where he developed responsibility, teamwork, and a strong sense of service. On top of being an active member of Boy Scouts of America, he has held leadership roles, including serving as a Senior Patrol Leader, and also contributes his time to programs like Kids Run 365. As a varsity lacrosse player and honors symphony orchestra musician, Will brings dedication, creativity, and collaboration to every part of his GMSD journey. Will is a senior and will graduate in May 2026.

 

Zoe Umsted

Zoe is a high-achieving student with a 4.5 GPA and a strong commitment to leadership and service. She is the President of the Community Service Club and is actively involved in many other school organizations. Professionally, Zoe has worked as a digital marketing intern at the University of Memphis and as a customer service representative at Germantown Athletic Club, while also running her own small neighborhood business. Her volunteer work spans from local efforts with the Memphis Rehabilitation Center, St. Jude, SOS (Service Over Self) , and the Germantown Animal Shelter to international service projects in Paraguay and Guatemala. With her global perspective and dedication, Zoe is a standout member of our intern team. Zoe is a student at GOAL, and she will graduate in May 2026.

Tips for Landing a Spot in the GMSD Internship Program

The GMSD Internship Program is one of the most competitive opportunities offered to juniors and seniors, with over 70 applicants vying for just six spots last year. Here’s how to stand out and increase your chances of being selected next year:

  1. Craft a Compelling Resume
    Highlight your contributions to GMSD, your school, and the community. Showcase leadership roles, extracurricular activities, and volunteer efforts that demonstrate your commitment and initiative.

  2. Do Your Research
    Familiarize yourself with GMSD communications tools and platforms, including our strategic plan, app, weekly newsletter, websites, and social media channels. In interviews, offer thoughtful insights about how you can contribute based on what you’ve observed.

  3. Showcase Your Creative Work
    Be prepared to share examples of your creative talents following your first virtual interview. Share school-related social media posts, class projects, short films, photographs, or other relevant samples that highlight your skills in marketing, graphic design, or communications.

  4. Excel in the Second Round
    Finalists are tasked with creating an article and a related creative project, such as a graphic, video, or social media post. This challenge demonstrates your ability to craft compelling content under pressure, so bring your best ideas and execution.
