Literacy Training Requirements
Tennessee Literacy Success Act and related initiatives under Reading 360 require certain training for teachers to align instructional practices with the state’s phonics-based literacy goals. Here’s an overview of the training requirements:Early Literacy Training for K-3 Teachers:
Mandatory Participation: All K-3 teachers, including interventionists and special education teachers, are required to complete state-approved early literacy training focused on phonics-based instruction.
- Training Components:
- A two-week summer training session.
- Practice-based activities designed to apply phonics-based methods in the classroom.
- Districts receive funding and stipends to support teacher participation.
- Teachers who have already completed the approved training may be exempt from further requirements.
Secondary Literacy Training:
- Available for educators teaching grades 4-12 to support literacy development across all content areas.
- While not mandatory for all, it provides valuable tools for secondary teachers to incorporate literacy practices into their instruction.
Ongoing Professional Development:
- Additional professional learning opportunities, such as virtual summits and webinars, are offered through the Reading 360 Program.
- Teachers are encouraged to engage in these optional sessions to stay informed about literacy strategies and resources.
