Athletes of All Ages Kick Off Football Season at Meet the Mustangs

Houston High School welcomed Mustangs of all ages to the field Friday night for Meet the Mustangs, an annual celebration of football, school spirit, and the community that supports the program.

Hosted by the H Club, Houston High’s football booster organization, the event brought together athletes, families and fans from across Germantown for an evening centered on the entire Mustang family, from some of its youngest athletes to the varsity team.

Germantown Football League football players and cheerleaders were invited onto the field to be recognized, giving the community a look at the future of the Mustang program, and the GFL cheerleaders also performed for the crowd.

Houston Middle School joined the celebration with football, cheer and pom students taking the field for introductions, along with performances from the HMS cheer and pom teams. Houston High cheer and pom continued the evening with performances and recognition before the varsity football team took center stage. Players were introduced by grade level, giving fans an opportunity to celebrate this year’s Mustangs ahead of the upcoming season.

Beyond the introductions and performances, Meet the Mustangs offered plenty for families to enjoy throughout the evening. Food trucks, vendors, bounce houses, booster club sponsors and other activities helped turn the event into a community celebration at Houston High.

Juliann DeMatteo, who helped coordinate the event, has been involved in a variety of school, athletics, and community organizations and said she enjoys creating opportunities that bring families together around students and their schools.

For DeMatteo, one of the best parts of being around Mustang football is seeing the relationships that develop within the program.

“The camaraderie on the team, the teammates, and the mentorship from the coaches of the players is something that I love about GMSD Athletics,” DeMatteo said of what stands out to her.

That sense of connection was on full display throughout Meet the Mustangs. With young GFL athletes sharing the same field as Houston Middle and Houston High students, the evening showcased the progression of the program and allowed younger Mustangs to see where their own football and spirit journeys could take them.

From performances and player introductions to snow cones shared and so much Mustang pride, Meet the Mustangs once again provided an opportunity to celebrate not only the start of football season, but the community behind it.

Our varsity football team’s home opener is THIS Friday, August 21 with kickoff at 7:00pm. Come support these Mustangs alongside cheer, pom, and Stang Gang as they take on the Germantown Red Devils. And don’t miss an outstanding performance by THE Houston Band at halftime. Go Mustangs!
