Athletics Weekly Report: Competing Today, Building for Tomorrow

Quarterback Canon Day hands the ball off to Brennen Odle in the game vs. Tupelo.

GMSD This Week in Athletics

Another busy week of GMSD Athletics is in the books, and our student-athletes continue to compete, grow, and represent our district at a high level.

From another impressive week for Houston Girls Soccer to Friday Night Lights against one of the region’s top football programs, rivalry volleyball, middle school competition, and continued growth throughout our athletic pipeline, there was plenty happening across GMSD.

Lady Mustangs Continue Championship-Level Start

Houston High School Girls Soccer continues to make an early statement.

The Lady Mustangs put together another outstanding week, earning victories over St. George’s, Evangelical Christian School, Baylor, and closing out the week with an impressive 3–0 victory over Bearden in a hard-fought match.

The final score does not fully tell the story of the Bearden game. Houston had to battle, stay composed, and compete for the entire match against a quality opponent. It was the type of performance that showed the toughness and maturity of this group.

“I was extremely proud of the way our girls competed,” said District Athletic Director Coach Davis. “That was a tough soccer game against a very good program. Our girls stayed together, competed for one another, and found a way to finish the job. Those are the types of games that help prepare you for where you want to be at the end of the season.”

Coach David Wolff and his team continue to demonstrate the consistency we have come to expect from Houston Girls Soccer.

What stands out is not simply the wins. It is the standard of preparation and competition that continues to exist within the program. Championship teams understand that success is earned daily, and this group continues to embrace that mindset.

There is still a lot of soccer ahead, but the Lady Mustangs continue to show why expectations remain high for Houston Girls Soccer.

Friday Night Lights — Competing Against the Best

Friday night provided another tremendous opportunity for our Houston football program as the Mustangs welcomed Tupelo High School to Landers Stadium.

Tupelo entered the matchup as one of Mississippi’s premier programs and showed why, earning a 42–13 victory.

While the result was not what we wanted, games like this are part of building and maintaining a championship program.

We believe in challenging our student-athletes. Playing outstanding competition exposes areas where we can improve, demands our best preparation, and prepares our teams for the games that matter most as the season progresses.

The Mustangs now turn their attention toward region competition, beginning Friday night at home against Bartlett.

Our goals remain in front of us, and now it is time to get back to work.

Rivalry Volleyball at Houston

Houston Volleyball welcomed rival Collierville to the varsity gym Thursday night for another chapter in one of our area’s great athletic rivalries.

The Lady Mustangs battled throughout the evening before falling 3–1. After dropping the first two sets, Houston responded by taking the third set 25–18 and battled to the very end in a tight 25–23 fourth set.

Win or lose, rivalry matches provide exactly the type of competitive environment we want our student-athletes to experience.

The season continues, and we look forward to watching this group continue to develop and compete as postseason play approaches.

Middle School Athletics Continue to Build the Pipeline

Our middle school programs continue to have a strong fall, with student-athletes at both Houston Middle School and Riverdale competing and developing across multiple sports.

One area that deserves recognition is middle school soccer. Both Houston Middle and Riverdale are having successful seasons, despite not having the opportunity to play their full schedules to this point because of the extreme heat and weather conditions we have experienced early in the fall.

Schedule adjustments can be difficult on student-athletes and coaches, but both programs have continued to practice, prepare, and take advantage of the opportunities they have had to compete.

That is exactly what we want to see at the middle school level.

Winning is important, but this stage is also about teaching our young student-athletes how to practice, compete, handle adversity, represent their schools, and become great teammates.

As temperatures begin to become more manageable, we are excited about the opportunity for both programs to get back into a more consistent competition schedule and continue building on their strong starts.

Houston Middle Football also hosted Bartlett this week, while HMS Cross Country traveled to Tupelo, Mississippi, for the ON Running Tupelo Invitational.

Postseason competition is quickly approaching for several of our middle school programs, making the next few weeks an exciting time across GMSD.

These middle school experiences are an important part of the GMSD athletic pipeline. Every practice and every game is another opportunity to prepare our young Mustangs for what comes next.

The future of GMSD Athletics continues to look bright.

Growing Athletics Across GMSD

That athletic pipeline is continuing to grow.

This year, GMSD is expanding athletic opportunities through our new 4th and 5th grade elementary basketball league.

The league will provide boys and girls from Dogwood, Farmington, Forest Hill, and Riverdale an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball, compete alongside their classmates, and begin experiencing what it means to represent their school.

For us, this initiative is about much more than basketball.

It is about creating opportunities, developing students, strengthening connections between our schools, and introducing our youngest student-athletes to the values we want represented throughout GMSD Athletics — teamwork, sportsmanship, effort, accountability, and school pride.

We are excited about what this program can become and what it can mean for the future of athletics throughout our district.

Another Big Week Ahead

September continues to be one of the busiest and most exciting times on the GMSD Athletics calendar, and another important week is ahead.

Middle school postseason competition is approaching, Houston/Riverdale Volleyball continues its schedule, Girls Soccer looks to continue its outstanding start, and Houston Football returns to Landers Stadium Friday night to begin region play against Bartlett.

Every team is at a different point in its season, but the expectation across our district remains the same:

Compete. Improve. Represent your school the right way.

Wins and championships will always matter, but our larger responsibility is to provide first-class experiences for our student-athletes while continuing to build programs our schools and community can be proud of.

Another week is in the books, but the work continues.

Raising the Standard Together.
