Raising the Standard Together

Another exciting week of GMSD Athletics is in the books, and our Mustangs continue to represent their schools and community with tremendous effort, pride, and sportsmanship.

From big wins and championship-level experiences to special moments connecting our youngest students with our high school student-athletes, this week reminded us that GMSD Athletics is about much more than the final score. It is about creating experiences, building relationships, developing leaders, and strengthening the Mustang community across our district.

HHS Girls Soccer Starts Strong

The Houston High School girls soccer team continues its impressive start to the season, earning two big victories this week over USJ and Hutchison.

Both opponents provided quality early-season tests for the Mustangs, and our girls responded with two strong performances. Competing against talented programs early in the season will only help prepare this group as the competition gets tougher and postseason goals come into focus.

It has been an excellent start, and we are excited to see what is ahead for this talented group.

Golf Takes on TPC Southwind

Our Houston golf team had an incredible opportunity this week to compete at the prestigious TPC Southwind, home of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Playing a course of this caliber gives our student-athletes an experience they will remember while also challenging them in a championship environment.

Opportunities like this help prepare our golfers for the type of courses, pressure, and competition they hope to encounter when championship season arrives. We are proud to see our Mustangs taking advantage of every opportunity to compete, learn, and improve.

Cross Country Continues Its Strong Start

Our Houston cross country teams remain unbeaten in team competition as they continue building momentum early in the season.

The Mustangs have put together an outstanding start, and their preparation and commitment continue to show each time they take the course.

Another exciting week of competition is ahead as our runners look to continue building toward what we hope will be another outstanding season.

Volleyball Ready to Bounce Back

Houston volleyball faced a difficult challenge this week against a talented Arlington team, one of the state's stronger programs this season.

The Mustangs battled hard but came up just short. Plenty of volleyball remains, and competing against quality opponents will only make this team stronger as the season progresses.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back as they travel this weekend. We wish our players and coaches the very best and know they will continue representing Houston High School and GMSD with tremendous pride.

Football Shows Heart at Whitehaven

The Houston Mustangs traveled to Whitehaven High School Friday night for another tough early-season matchup.

Although the Mustangs came up a little short on the scoreboard, the team showed tremendous heart, toughness, and Mustang pride throughout the night.

Now the focus turns to the next opportunity as Houston prepares for another big challenge against a very talented Southwind team.

Our Mustangs will be looking to bounce back with a big performance, and we look forward to seeing our community continue to support our student-athletes and coaches.

Forest Hill Celebrates With Our Future Mustangs

One of our favorite moments of the week came away from competition.

Forest Hill Elementary School held a fantastic beginning-of-the-year pep rally, and members of the Houston High School football and cheer programs joined in the celebration.

Our HHS student-athletes had the opportunity to interact with our future Mustangs, share what it means to represent their school, and offer advice about being a Mustang both on and off the field.

These moments show what makes GMSD Athletics special.

Our younger students get to see and learn from the student-athletes they may one day follow, while our high school students have an opportunity to understand the responsibility that comes with representing something bigger than themselves.

From elementary school to Houston High School, we are building connections that strengthen the entire Mustang family.

Houston Middle Football Earns Big Win

Congratulations to the Houston Middle School football team on an outstanding victory over MUS this week!

The Mustangs turned in an impressive performance and continue to build excitement around the HMS football program.

Congratulations to our players and coaches on a great team win and another strong representation of Mustang Athletics.

More Than Athletics: HMS House Reveal

Another special moment at Houston Middle School this week was the House Reveal, as approximately 370 new students were officially welcomed into their HMS Houses.

For anyone familiar with the excitement of the House Sorting Ceremony in Harry Potter, you can imagine the energy surrounding this moment for our middle school students. But at HMS, the House system brings together tradition, belonging, school spirit, teamwork, and community.

Throughout the year, HMS Houses participate in activities and competitions, including quarterly athletic events where students compete to earn points toward the coveted House Cup.

These competitions give students another opportunity to represent something bigger than themselves, build relationships, develop school pride, and create memories with their classmates.

Although the House Reveal itself isn't an athletic competition, it represents so much of what we value in GMSD Athletics: teamwork, pride, healthy competition, leadership, and bringing people together. We were proud for GMSD Athletics to be part of such a memorable experience for our students.

Houston Middle School continues to do an amazing job creating a culture where students are excited to belong and proud to represent their school. Seeing nearly 370 students discover their Houses and begin that journey together was a great reminder of the tremendous school and community pride being built at HMS.

Riverdale and HMS Meet on the Volleyball Court

It was also great to see Riverdale and Houston Middle School compete against one another in volleyball this week.

There is always something special about watching two of our GMSD schools compete. Today they may stand on opposite sides of the net, but before long, many of these student-athletes will be wearing the same uniform and representing Houston High School together.

That is one of the things that makes our district athletics family so special.

Competition makes us better. Relationships bring us together. And ultimately, we are all Mustangs.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming week will be a little shorter with no school on Friday, but there is still plenty of GMSD Athletics action ahead.

Our teams will continue competing, improving, and representing their schools throughout the week, and we encourage our entire GMSD community to come out and support our student-athletes whenever possible.

Whether it is on the field, court, course, or sidelines, we can't wait to see you there.

Every competition is another opportunity to improve. Every school is another part of our Mustang family. And every student-athlete has an opportunity to help us continue building something special across GMSD.
