GMSD This Week in Athletics

Raising the Standard Together

As September comes to a close, GMSD Athletics is entering one of the most exciting stretches of the fall season.

Homecoming brought our community together at Landers Stadium, Houston High School programs continued positioning themselves for postseason opportunities, and our middle school teams moved into championship-season competition.

Across the district, our student-athletes continue to compete with purpose while representing their schools and community at a high level.

Homecoming Statement: Mustangs Roll Past Cordova

Houston High School Football delivered a memorable Homecoming performance Friday night, defeating Cordova 46–0 at Landers Stadium.

The victory was Houston's second consecutive win and improved the Mustangs to 3–3 overall and 2–0 in Region 7-6A play. After defeating Bartlett 38–35 the previous week, Houston has scored 84 points over its last two games while beginning region play unbeaten.

More importantly, the Mustangs are building momentum at the right time.

Friday night was also another reminder of what makes Homecoming special. Students, alumni, families, staff, and community members filled our campus with Mustang pride throughout the week.

Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang.

Girls Soccer Continues Remarkable Run

One of the strongest stories in GMSD Athletics this fall continues to be Houston High School Girls Soccer.

The Lady Mustangs defeated Munford 9–0 on Senior Night before traveling to Bartlett and earning another 4–0 victory.

Houston now stands 13–0, and the Lady Mustangs have recorded nine consecutive shutouts. MaxPreps currently lists Houston among Tennessee's top girls soccer programs.

The challenge now is to continue improving as postseason play approaches.

Volleyball Continues Building Toward October

Houston Volleyball continues working through a challenging schedule designed to prepare the Lady Mustangs for postseason competition.

Houston earned a 3–0 victory over Munford this past week as the program continued adding to a strong fall campaign.

The schedule has included competition from across Tennessee and the Southeast, providing valuable experience as the regular season moves toward October.

With postseason volleyball approaching quickly, every match becomes another opportunity to sharpen execution and prepare for tournament play.

Cross Country Takes on Elite Competition

Houston Cross Country traveled to Columbia, Missouri, this weekend for the Gans Creek Classic, continuing our department's commitment to providing student-athletes opportunities to compete against outstanding competition beyond West Tennessee.

Opportunities like these are about more than one race. Competing in strong fields and unfamiliar environments helps prepare our runners for the pressure and level of competition they will see later in the championship season.

Middle School Athletics: Championship Season Has Arrived

The fall postseason is underway for Houston Middle School, with several Mustang programs entering an important stretch of competition.

Houston Middle Girls Soccer earned the No. 1 seed entering district tournament competition following an outstanding regular season. The Lady Mustangs will continue postseason play Monday, September 28, hosting Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. at HMS.

Football returns home Thursday for a special 8th Grade Night against Arlington. Games begin at 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. at the Houston High School football field as we recognize our eighth-grade student-athletes and their contributions to the program.

Houston Middle Cross Country closes the week Friday at the Frank Horton Invitational at Shelby Farms.

This is where the work throughout August and September begins to show.

Our middle school programs are not simply developmental programs. They are an important part of the competitive pipeline preparing student-athletes to eventually represent Houston High School.

Basketball Season Is Around the Corner

Even as fall sports enter championship season, winter preparation is beginning.

Houston Middle will hold girls basketball tryouts Monday from 3:15–5:15 p.m. in Gym A.

Boys basketball tryouts begin Monday from 3:15–5:15 p.m. in Gym B and continue Tuesday from 3:15–5:15 p.m. in Gym A.

The Week Ahead | September 28–October 2

Another full week awaits GMSD Athletics as September turns to October.

Monday, September 28 brings HMS Girls Soccer postseason action against Lakeland at 4:30 p.m., along with the beginning of middle school basketball tryouts.

Tuesday through Thursday, Houston Middle Tennis competes in City Championship action at Leftwich Tennis Center. Tuesday also includes a 3:45 p.m. tennis match against Germantown at C.O. Franklin Park.

Wednesday evening, our Boys and Girls Lacrosse Interest Meeting takes place at HMS as we continue expanding opportunities and building the future of GMSD Lacrosse.

Thursday night is 8th Grade Night for Houston Middle Football, with Arlington visiting the Houston High School football field for games at 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.

And then...

Friday Night Belongs to the Mustangs

Houston High School Football returns to Landers Stadium Friday night at 6:00 p.m.

It will also be Houston Middle Night at HHS, giving our future Mustangs an opportunity to be part of the Friday-night atmosphere and see firsthand where their athletic journey can lead.

Houston Middle Cross Country will also compete Friday in the Frank Horton Invitational at Shelby Farms.
