The Germantown Municipal School District Board of Education has named Brian Curry as its new chairman, a role he steps into with a steady mix of humility, service, and determined advocacy.

Curry, who was first elected to the board in 2020 and is now serving his second term, has long been known for quietly but fervently digging into the work behind the scenes. From legislative advocacy to late nights at school events, his leadership style is rooted in showing up, listening, and doing the work.

“I wanted to make a difference for the community,” Curry said. “I felt like I had a skill set I could bring to the table, and I was passionate about service. Over my two terms, I learned a lot about public education, about what we are doing well, and about how important it is to keep advocating for our schools. There are a lot of great things happening in Germantown, and I wanted to continue to serve.”

Curry said he is honored by the trust his fellow board members placed in him.

“I am very humbled to have the opportunity,” he said. “That was not anything I was striving for. I am grateful my colleagues thought highly enough of me to step into this role, and I want to lead with humility and make sure we are moving in the right direction together.”

Professionally, Curry works for FedEx, where he began a new role as Senior Business Strategist in September with a focus on logistics. His career has included leadership in operations, training, and project management, experiences he says have shaped the way he approaches board work.

“My career has really broadened my horizons,” Curry said. “Working with different teams, different perspectives, and different backgrounds teaches you how to listen, collaborate, and problem-solve. If I can lead and support teams in that environment, I feel confident bringing those same skills to the board.”

Before joining the board, Curry was deeply involved in school-based volunteer leadership, including helping found the Forest Hill Elementary PTO and being active in Dogwood Elementary parent groups. He also helped create opportunities for dads to get involved through the Fathers of Forest Hill group.

“Being part of the PTO showed me just how much work happens behind the scenes,” he said. “They really are the lifeblood of our schools. They give so much time and energy to make our campuses better for kids, and I wanted to be part of that.”

Curry and his wife, Kristi, have two daughters in GMSD schools. Caroline is a senior at Houston High School, and Linley is an eighth grader. He is a familiar face at concerts, games, and performances across the district and says balancing board service with being a parent is something his family navigates together.

“There is sacrifice involved, and my family understands that,” Curry said. “There are weeks I am at something every night, but I try to involve them. I want them to see what their classmates are doing, to support their peers, and to be proud of their schools. At the end of the day, I am still dad first.”

As chairman, Curry says he plans to make small improvements to meeting flow and structure while preserving the strong, collaborative culture of the board.

“We have thoughtful discussion. We do not always agree, but we respect each other and work through things professionally,” he said. “I want to continue that. I am not here to rock the boat. I am here to help us move forward together.”

Curry is especially passionate about legislative advocacy and encouraging community engagement.

“Public education is changing, and not all of that is in our control,” he said. “I would ask our families and community to stay engaged and help us in the fight to keep public education strong in Germantown.”

Superintendent Jason Manuel said Curry’s advocacy is one of his greatest strengths.“Brian has been relentless when it comes to advocating for our district,” Manuel said. “As our legislative rep, he has studied the issues, asked smart questions, and has never been afraid to go to bat for GMSD. He does not do surface-level involvement. He fully commits. That kind of leadership is exactly what you want in the board chair.”

Looking ahead, Curry says the district’s new strategic plan will serve as a guidepost for the work to come.

“Our strategic plan is our North Star,” he said. “Everything we do should be about student achievement and outcomes, whether that is academics, career pathways, certifications, or preparing students to be strong citizens. When our students walk across that stage at Houston High, they should be ready for whatever comes next. That is the goal.”

As he begins his term as chairman, Curry’s message to students, staff, and families is simple.

“We are committed to you,” he said. “We are committed to our staff, our families, and our students, and we are going to keep working to make GMSD the best it can be.”
