Brian Elder Roofing, MetroBuilders Memphis and GMSD team up to create winning holiday float
GMSD took top honors at this year’s Germantown Holiday Parade, earning first place in the float division with a bold and imaginative design inspired by Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
GMSD Wins First Place at Germantown Holiday Parade with A World of Our Own
At the center of the project was Addie Smith, a Houston High School senior and AP art student, whose design brought to life the theme “A World of Our Own.” Smith, who is also a GMSD student communications intern, led her AP Art classmates in painting the factory backdrop featuring oversized gobstoppers and colorful slides. Houston High’s Student Government Association provided the manpower behind the moving pieces, ensuring the whimsical elements ran smoothly during the parade.
The float also highlighted the district’s performing arts programs, with theater and choir students from each school lending their voices to create a memorable live soundtrack. The musical performances echoed GMSD’s kickoff celebration earlier this year, where teachers were introduced to the “A World of Our Own” theme with a performance featuring Superintendent Jason Manuel as Willy Wonka.
While student talent and creativity were the driving forces, the float would not have been possible without the support of Metro Builders Memphis and Brian Elder Roofing, the float’s sponsors. These longtime partners provided critical resources and expertise to turn the students’ ambitious vision into reality.
“We are proud to support GMSD and the incredible ideas these students bring to life,” said Chris Price who owns both companies. “Watching their creativity shine at events like this is inspiring, and it’s an honor to play a role in the process.”
This partnership is part of an ongoing tradition for Metro Builders Memphis and Brian Elder Roofing, both of which have consistently supported GMSD initiatives that highlight student achievement and innovation.
The collaborative effort paid off in a big way, with the float earning first place in its division. For GMSD, it was not just a win for the district but also a celebration of the partnerships and teamwork that make projects like this possible.
