DES Students Explore Big Futures at Career Fair Week

Students at Dogwood Elementary School spent last week discovering a wide range of careers during a two-part career awareness event designed to spark curiosity and expand horizons.

Organized by school counselors Brandi Fitchpatric and Casey Fernandez, the initiative is part of the school counseling program’s focus on career exploration for all students. The event was split into two age-specific experiences, giving every grade level a chance to engage in hands-on learning.

For younger students, Pre-K through second grade participated in “Careers on Wheels,” an outdoor event that brought real-world vehicles and community helpers directly to campus.

Students explored fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and SWAT vehicles, with opportunities to climb inside, ask questions, and learn how each plays a role in the community.

Representatives from parks and recreation, forestry, and public works also attended, showcasing equipment and giving students a close-up look at jobs that keep the city running.

For third through fifth graders, the focus shifted indoors with a traditional career fair format.

Students rotated through sessions led by a diverse group of presenters, many of whom were parents and community members volunteering their time. Careers represented included medical professionals such as orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, dermatologists, pharmacists, and optometrists, as well as engineers, financial advisors, FBI agents, Navy officers, a FedEx pilot, and a chief marketing officer. A swim coach and representatives connected to local sports organizations also shared insights into careers in athletics.

One highlight of the day was a special appearance by the new women’s basketball coach from University of Memphis women's basketball, who spoke during the first session and brought a unique perspective from the world of collegiate athletics.

The goal of the event, according to the counselors, is simple: expose students to careers they may not have considered and inspire future possibilities. Following the event, students reflect during guidance lessons, sharing their favorite presenters and what they learned. Many walk away with new ideas and sometimes even bold career goals.

Above all, the success of the week depended on community support. From parents to local professionals, volunteers played a key role in making the experience meaningful.

“It’s truly a group effort,” the counselors shared. “We’re just really thankful for the parents and the community for giving their time.”

With engaging experiences and enthusiastic participation, DES’s Career Fair Week once again helped students start imagining the paths their futures might take.
