Find Your Fit: GMSD Reimagines the Traditional Career Fair

GMSD hosted its first traditional career fair this year, but true to form, Find Your Fit was designed to be more than a room full of tables and resumes. GMSD has long relied on a high-touch, school based approach to recruiting, so hosting this year’s traditional career fair marked a deliberate shift in strategy. Find Your Fit expanded access for candidates while still reflecting the district’s relationship-driven hiring culture, combining the efficiency of a fair with the personalized conversations that have always defined how GMSD brings new educators into the organization.


Leading the effort was HR Supervisor Michael Ruiz, who approached the event as both a recruitment strategy and a systems upgrade. Rather than focusing on volume, Ruiz centered the day on alignment. Candidates were guided toward schools that matched their interests, certification areas and professional goals, allowing for conversations about instructional approach, mentoring and campus culture.

Behind the scenes, Ruiz introduced a more tech-forward approach that streamlined the entire experience. Digital sign-ins, real-time candidate tracking and pre-aligned certification data allowed the HR team to quickly connect applicants with the right opportunities, reducing wait times and keeping conversations focused. The upgraded systems handled the logistics so school teams and candidates could spend their time on meaningful dialogue rather than paperwork.

The event was also a true HR team collaboration, with staff coordinating logistics, managing candidate flow, supporting school leaders and creating a welcoming environment from start to finish. Clear signage, organized meeting spaces and intentional pacing ensured that both candidates and hiring teams could focus on finding the right fit.

The structure of the event also reflected GMSD’s long-term focus on retention. Conversations included support for new teachers, leadership development pathways and opportunities for future educators who are seeking next-steps on their journey. The result was a hiring event that emphasized fit, growth and stability rather than quick placement.

As Ruiz’s first time leading the fair, Find Your Fit demonstrated a thoughtful balance of traditional structure and GMSD’s personalized approach. It marked a new chapter in recruitment while reinforcing the district’s belief that the right match between educator and school is the foundation for long-term success.  Next up, the district will begin to post open positions as they become available.
