GMSD Invites Families, Community Partners, and Alumni to Join Our CTE Career Network

An HHS alum talks to students about his medical career

GMSD is expanding hands-on career exploration across all schools, and we are inviting our parents and community partners to join us.

Houston High continues to expand real-world learning through a growing lineup of Career Chats and guest speaker events. These short sessions give students a chance to meet professionals, ask questions, and learn about pathways they may not have considered.  Our College and Career Counselors, Sara Schmitt and Ashley Kreitz, organize and host the series.

Medical School Career Chat
Students interested in medicine were invited to a drop-in Career Chat hosted in the College and Career Office on November 14 during lunch. This session introduced students to the path to medical school, required coursework, and what life as a medical student is really like. The session was led by two HHS alumni, Elizabeth Lesley and Sehrab Bagha, as well as an additional guest Devin Bocook.

Another medical student - she also speaks to interested students

Occupational Therapy Career Chat
On November 18, HHS alumna Leah Rupetz will return to campus to speak with students about her journey into occupational therapy. Leah is currently studying at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Students in grades 9 through 12 can attend during Flex time.

Engineering Career Chat
Last week, Wayne Dahl, a recruiter with Nucor Steel, visited Steve Summy’s Mechatronics classes to share strong job prospects in the skilled trades. He also led a packed Career Chat during lunch, where students learned more about high-demand engineering opportunities in the Memphis region.

How You Can Get Involved
GMSD is actively seeking parents, alumni, and community partners to serve as guest speakers or host students for short-term experiences. Whether you can share your career journey, offer a job shadowing opportunity, or partner with our CTE programs, your involvement helps students understand the many paths available after graduation.
