GMSD Recognized as Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education District

All principals of GMSD gather around a civics seal banner

Germantown Municipal School District has been named a 2024–25 Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education District, one of only two districts in the state to receive the honor from the Tennessee Department of Education. The designation recognizes districts that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to high-quality civics instruction.

GMSD was one of only two districts in the state to earn this distinction.

To qualify, at least 80 percent of a district’s schools must earn the Governor’s Civics Seal. GMSD exceeded that benchmark with every brick-and-mortar school earning the seal and being listed on the Governor’s Civics Seal information sheet. The recognition reflects 100 percent participation from the district’s social studies teachers, who are already implementing this year’s civics lessons in classrooms across all schools.

“This is a proud moment for our teachers and students,” said Dianne Stovall who partnered with Megan Jackson on achieving the recognition. “Strong civics instruction helps students understand how their government works and how they can engage in their communities. Our teachers do an incredible job bringing that to life.”

Civics learning in GMSD extends beyond the classroom. Houston High School hosts voter registration event each November, during all lunches, giving eligible students the opportunity to register, ask questions and learn about the responsibilities of civic participation.

This past week, the Tennessee Department of Education also recognized the achievement by providing an official banner for every GMSD school to display, highlighting the district’s leadership in preparing students for informed and engaged citizenship.
