Germantown Municipal School District has been honored as a 2024–2025 Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education District, a prestigious recognition awarded by the Tennessee Department of Education to districts demonstrating exceptional dedication to high-quality civics instruction. Only two districts across the entire state earned this distinction this year, Alvin C. York Institute and GMSD, placing Germantown among Tennessee’s top leaders in civics education.

To qualify, at least 80 percent of a district’s schools must earn the Governor’s Civics Seal, a benchmark GMSD far surpassed. Every brick-and-mortar school in the district earned the seal and is listed on the Governor’s Civics Seal information sheet, reflecting the deep commitment of educators across all grade levels.

This achievement highlights the extraordinary work of GMSD’s social studies teachers, who reached full participation districtwide. Teachers received this year’s civics lessons earlier in the semester and have already begun implementing them in classrooms, ensuring students gain a strong foundation in government, citizenship, and community engagement. Their success has been strengthened by the leadership and support of Dianne Stovall and Megan Jackson.

“This is a proud moment for our teachers and students,” said Dianne Stovall. “Strong civics instruction helps students understand how their government works and how they can engage in their communities. Our teachers do an incredible job bringing that to life.”

On Wednesday, November 19, Houston High School will host a voter registration event during all lunches, giving eligible students the chance to register to vote, ask questions, and learn more about the responsibilities that come with participating in the democratic process.
