Inside the Process GMSD Calendar Committee Gets to Work

The work of building the school calendar is officially underway in Germantown Municipal School District, and this year’s calendar committee is bringing a full table of perspectives to the conversation.

The group includes six student representatives, several parents and teachers from each school, and team members from across district departments. With voices from every corner of GMSD represented, the room was full and the conversations were meaningful.

Together, the committee is working through key decision points that shape the school year, including the first and last days of school, meeting state instructional requirements, and aligning fall and spring breaks with neighboring districts to support families across the region.

At the same time, the group is also exploring new ideas. Conversations included rethinking how GMSD approaches parent-teacher conferences and considering ways to better align district learning days with family-friendly weekends, when students are out of school but teachers remain in session.

This process is designed to be collaborative, and input from the community is a key part of the work. In the coming week, committee members will be gathering feedback from their respective schools. Families, students, and staff are encouraged to connect with their school’s representative and share their thoughts.

Based on that feedback, the committee will develop one or possibly two calendar options for the 2027–28 school year. Proposed calendars will be presented to the public and the Germantown Board of Education in April.

It’s also a good time to clarify how the calendar process works. The calendar for the upcoming 2026–27 school year has already been set. In fact, the proposed version of that calendar was published on the district website this time last year to give families an early look and help with long-term planning.

Why “proposed”? Each year, the Board of Education adopts the instructional calendar in April for the year after next. The district then submits that calendar to the state for final approval during its designated window. Sharing the calendar early, even before final state approval, helps families plan vacations and important dates well in advance.

As this year’s committee continues its work, one thing is clear: the GMSD calendar is more than a set of dates. It’s a thoughtful balance of academics, family needs, and community input—all designed to support students throughout the year.
