From bicycle lessons and high-tech immersion technology to the addition of archery, our PE department continues to innovate in promoting active lifestyles for students.

The Germantown Municipal School District is taking Physical Education to the next level with dynamic, student-centered offerings across all grade levels. By blending traditional sports with creative, skill-building activities, GMSD’s PE programs are equipping students with the tools to lead active, healthy lives. Here’s a closer look at the unique and engaging PE initiatives making waves in the district:

Pedaling Toward Lifetime Wellness
Houston High School is setting a remarkable standard with its Bike Education program for freshmen enrolled in Lifetime Wellness classes. This program teaches students essential biking skills, road safety, and the importance of cycling as a sustainable and lifelong fitness activity. By combining practical skills with fun and fitness, this initiative prepares students for both recreation and responsibility on the road.

Aiming for Success with Archery
Archery is taking center stage at Houston Middle School and Houston High School, offering students the opportunity to develop focus, precision, and discipline. This program not only sharpens physical skills but also boosts confidence and mental resilience, demonstrating the broader benefits of this ancient sport. "I love that this sport often appeals to students who may not enjoy traditional sports," said Coordinated School Health Supervisor Andy Martin.

Interactive Technology in Action
Everyone knows that children enjoy video games, but what if they could be 'in' the video game? Farmington Elementary and Dogwood Elementary are redefining PE with the integration of Lu’ Interactive Technology. This cutting-edge tool combines digital engagement with physical movement, motion sensors and high-tech projections, creating an immersive experience for students. From interactive games to dynamic fitness challenges, Lu’ brings excitement and energy to the gymnasium, making exercise a highlight of the school day.

Themed Adventures for Active Learning
Our elementary PE teachers continue to innovate around their PE curriculum by creating a series of themed adventures. Students at Riverdale participate in activities inspired by Harry Potter, the Olympics, superheroes, and heart health, fostering creativity and enthusiasm.  At Farmington, students are still talking about 'spooky gym'!

Mindfulness and Choice at the Forefront
Forest Hill Elementary is prioritizing mental health and student agency in its PE program. With mindfulness exercises and choice-driven activities, students learn to listen to their bodies and make decisions that support their overall well-being. This approach empowers young learners to take an active role in their physical and emotional health.

A Holistic Approach to Student Wellness
From pedaling bikes to practicing archery, from engaging with interactive technology to exploring magical and meaningful themes, GMSD’s PE programs are as diverse as the students they serve. By prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional wellness, these initiatives help students develop habits and skills that will benefit them far beyond the gymnasium.

The only question is, 'What’s next?' With such a broad range of offerings, GMSD’s Physical Education programs stand out as a model of innovation and inclusivity. From cycling and mindfulness to interactive technology, students are discovering that PE is more than just a class—it’s a gateway to a healthier, happier future.
