Avatar: Fantasia Offers a Celebration of Student Voices, Art, and Imagination at Houston High

Hot off the presses, the Houston High Literary Magazine has released its latest edition, Avatar: Fantasia. It is a striking example of what happens when student expression, visual art, and storytelling come together with purpose. This year’s magazine leans fully into its theme, drawing from mythology and fantasy across cultures while still grounding each piece in the experiences of teenage life.

What makes Avatar: Fantasia especially effective is its cohesion. The editorial team has clearly curated a collection that feels intentional, with recurring mythological motifs woven throughout. At the same time, individual voices are never lost. The range of expression is one of the magazine’s greatest strengths. Pieces vary thematically, with some offering new takes on tradition and others reflecting more personal emotions and experiences.

The magazine also hosts a variety of literary genres, including poetry, short fiction, prose, and dramatics, all penned by the student body. Visual art across the magazine is equally compelling, with captivating illustrations, paintings, and photography complementing written pieces throughout.

Many of the featured works were done by the magazine’s staff members themselves. Aivley Barnett, one of the resident staff artists, created the magazine’s stunning cover and has works appearing throughout the publication, showcasing her strong grasp of diverse art styles. Staff members Hailey Camp and Sloane Ebach also contributed works, both artistic and literary, and Hafsa Zaman’s tasteful photography accompanies several literary pieces such as those by staff writers Demya Smith and Lavinia Hsin. Serving together as co-editors-in-chief, veteran members Briley Lake and Sumaiya Zaman not only added their own work to the collection but also helped guide the magazine’s thematic and organizational direction.

As integral as students are to this publication, the HHS Avatar wouldn’t exist without the thoughtful guidance of its advisor, NaToya Chandler, who has helped shape a magazine that is both creative and polished. She gives her students the perfect balance of creative freedom and helpful assistance to bring each year’s edition to fruition.

Avatar: Fantasia effectively represents the creativity of Houston High School’s 2025-26 student body as the publication approaches its 40th edition next school year. Carrying the same spirit as its very first editions, this magazine allows its readers to not only be inspired by the diversity of its pieces but also invites them to challenge their perception of classical themes and stories.
