Houston Middle School uses local restaurant to teach a valuable lesson

As a culminating activity for finishing the book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, in our RTI class this semester, Mrs. Cantkier and Ms. Starks met a group of students and their families at Belly Acres restaurant in Midtown.

"For our latest venture, we were able to experience a 'local sustainable meal' right here in our area," shared Starks. "Owners Ben McLean and Executive Chef Rob Ray spoke about the years worth of research they did to find the best local food suppliers, their process for getting food from farm to table, and answered questions from our group. They had even read the book and were able to dispel some of the myths".

The Belly Acres goal is to “feed families better, and introduce better food to young people.” They also let the students in on a secret as well…they’re planning to open a location in Germantown in the future.

"Thank you so much Belly Acres for hosting us; we had a great time and are proud to have “voted with our forks” in support of local sustainable restaurants," said Cantkier in praise of the establishment.
