GMSD students dominate All-West Band and Orchestra

“It’s the largest number of students we’ve ever had to make it,” says Houston Band director Jim Smith. One parent jokes on Facebook that “our students are going to make up the whole All-West band”. With just over 100 children from HHS, HMS, and RES, these fine young musicians made quite an impression on the judges last weekend.

What is All-West, you may be wondering? Officially called West-Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, the organization serves to “promote the study of instrumental music through band and orchestra programs in the schools of West Tennessee”. But, come January each year, it becomes a regional competition. Students from public and private schools alike prepare for auditions with the hopes of being selected to perform in a regional band, orchestra, or ensemble. Being selected is a huge honor.

The concert series runs January-February, but if you are hoping to mark your calendars to support the latest honorees then February 11-13 at the Cannon Center represent the biggest bang for your ticket dollar. From the All-West auditions, the best in the State are also selected—an even larger honor. Click here to view the 2015 All-State representatives. These names are an indication of the exceptional music teachers that work in our schools.
