Swan Song: Band Director Jim Smith's retirement celebration gala

Long time band director and educator, Jim Smith, is retiring after 25 years at Houston High School. All Houston band students and parents, whether alumni or current, as well as the general community who would like to celebrate Mr. Smith’s legacy and accomplishments, are invited to A Night Under the Stars Gala to be held Saturday, May 28, 2016. In honor of Mr. Smith, The Houston Band Foundation, in cooperation with The Houston Band Boosters, is hosting this retirement celebration gala Memorial Day weekend, May 28-29, 2016.

The evening will begin with a preview party from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the large band room at Houston High School. Stop in to see other band students, trophies, scrapbooks and marching show videos. Then immediately following the preview party, A Night Under the Stars gala will be held on the football field. The gala event includes dinner, an alumni jazz band concert, video tribute of the last 25 years, speakers and, of course, time with Mr. Smith.

Also that evening, The Houston Band Foundation will be accepting donations of used or new instruments to help The Houston Band program replenish their inventory. The Foundation intends to highlight the importance of the great band program at Houston High School with the donation of used instruments. All instrument donations made to the Foundation are tax deductible, and the tax donation documentation will be provided.

Then on Sunday afternoon, May 29, 2016 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., The Band Boosters organization will host an Open House in the band room at Houston High School. Alumni, students and visitors will tour the school, the band room, see old friends, look at trophies and scrapbooks and talk with Mr. Smith. Houston Band merchandise will be available for purchase. The Open House is free and open to anyone who can stop by to participate in the festivities.
