Big capital improvement plans have been set into motion for the summer of 2016
With the creation of the GMSD, residents were provided the opportunity to create a partnership between the City of Germantown, Shelby County Commission and Germantown Municipal Schools. Historically, the Shelby County School District was challenged with balancing the construction of new school facilities with deferred maintenance and capital improvements. Unfortunately, much of their capital improvement budget was spent on new school creation. Germantown Municipals Schools inherited an extensive deferred maintenance list.
During the spring of 2015, the District received funding from the Shelby County Commission for capital improvements in the amount of $975,000. The Commission approved a Farmington window project which cost $366,000. GMSD administration went back to the Shelby County Commission and requested the remainder of the money to be appropriated for HVAC units at Dogwood Elementary School. This project was approved and will be completed during the summer of 2016. The Germantown School Board has approved the bids for the units.
A comprehensive facilities study was also one of the first projects completed by the GMSD Operations Department. The study conducted by Fleming Architects focused on electrical, ADA, mechanical and structural components of all GMSD schools. They grouped all school components based on two priorities: Priority One items which needed to be completed within five years and Priority Two items needing completion in six to ten years. From this study, the GMSD School Board created a
Five Year Project Prioritization Plan For Capital Improvements
During the fiscal year of 2015, the entire capital improvement budget was $442,000. This amount of funding was insufficient to accomplish major capital improvements. However, the District was able to complete several smaller projects: HHS Energy Management ($157K), HMS Gym Floor ($98K), HMS Repavement ($115K) and HHS Television Studio ($57K). Other smaller projects included sidewalks and exterior lighting.
The District is excited to announce that we have been working with the City of Germantown and the Shelby County Commission to complete items on our deferred maintenance list, chiefly the replacement of the Dogwood roof. The estimated cost of this project, according to the Fleming Study, is $1,250,000.
In preparation for the completion of the DES roof, the District signed a contract with Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon on February 4th, 2016, to examine the roof, pull old drawings, research the roof history, visually inspect the roof and determine structural integrity. A roof coring was also completed to determine the number of roof overlays.
The architect firm is currently completing the bid package to be released mid- to late- March.
The Board of Mayor and Alderman and the Germantown Municipal School Board will both have to approve the roof project in April for a construction date starting May 30, 2016.
The District is also proud that the City of Germantown and School Board are on track to replace the 22 portables at Riverdale Elementary School. The City went to bond for $11,000,000 to build a Riverdale Expansion opening in the fall of 2017.
The Groundbreaking Ceremony will take place on May 5th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
on the Riverdale Campus and is open to Riverdale families (past and present) as well as the media.
