Germantown, Tennessee--June 5, 2020--Statement from GMSD
The Germantown Municipal School District is committed to inspiring each child to achieve their personal excellence. During times of social crisis, I believe schools play an essential role in protecting, educating, developing, and uniting our students.
The demonstrations and expressions of frustration due to systemic inequalities, persecution, and racism are signs of the long journey ahead as we grow as a school district, a community, and a country.
Now is the time for our Germantown family to strengthen our commitment to address inequities and work towards a culture of anti-racism. It is during these times that we must come together, support one another, LISTEN, and take action.
As your Superintendent, I stand with our Black students and all students who feel marginalized. We will do what it takes to amplify their voices and make them feel supported. I want to foster an environment in which students feel comfortable expressing themselves and discussing racism, with the hopes that we can begin to change as a broader community.
As educators, we must intensify our use of curriculum that is diverse and culturally sensitive. I will ensure that our staff are promoting a culturally responsive environment by providing additional training. The training will emphasize not only the practice of responsive culture, but embrace a culture of humility. It is critical that we have ongoing conversations that actively work towards change.
I, along with the entire GMSD Board, faculty, and staff, want you to know that you are not alone; our past is not our destiny, and together we can make a difference.
