GMSD athletics mid-season Round-up: Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football & Soccer

The Varsity Boys tied for 1st Place in the MUS Invitational and won the Dragon Invitational outright during the regular season, while finishing with a 22-6 record.
We won the  15AAA District Tournament by 1 shot and won Region 8AAA for the 19th consecutive year also by 1 shot.
We finished 4th at the TSSAA State Tournament held in Manchester, TN.

Individually, Senior Grey Smith won the Individual District Tournament with a 69 at The Links at Audubon and Senior Travis Olsen won the Region individual with 71, also at The Links. Grey's 69 was the low individual round of the season. 

The Varsity Girls Golf dominated all year with a 18-3 record.
We won both District and Region.  
We finished 5th in the TSSAA State Tournament. Kimberly Tsai was the highest finisher from West TN (8th overall). She also medaled with 69 at both District and Region . Her 69's were season lows for girls.

We finished the season as State Runner-Up, it was the first time Volleyball had played for the State Championship in school history.
We won the 15AA District Tournament, the Region 8AAA Tournament and the Sectional Championship over Clarksville. It was the 9th consecutive year we have qualified for the State Tournament.

Kennedy Shaw was chosen as MaxPreps TN Athlete of The Week after her performance in the State Tournament, the only Memphis player chosen by the national organization this year in volleyball.

Both teams competed at the State championships over the weekend.

Region 8AAA Champions for the 26th consecutive year.
Overall Winner at Hickory Flat Invitational, Jr. Ward Tennessee Classic and Frank Horton Classic.
Standout Individual Performances:
All 7 girls finished in top 15 in Region and at the Hickory Flat Invitational
Freshmen Gracey Owens finished 2nd Overall, while Senior Annabel Leonard was 3rd Overall at Region
Annabel Leonard and fellow Senior Brenna Riseling, both finished in the Top 10 at Frank Horton Classic


Finished 3rd in Region 8AAA, which qualified them for the State Championship for the 25th time in school history.

Jake Arnold, Sam Tankersley, and Robert Randall finished 1,2,3 at Hickory Flat Invitational
Jake Arnold finished 8th Overall in Region Championship meet.
Drew Randolph (a senior) - went from 15th man in 2018 to 4th on team in 2019, cutting over 2 minutes off his time!


Is currently undefeated 10-0 and Region Champion for the second consecutive year. Head Coach and Houston High graduate, James Thomas, held a 19-2 record heading into Friday‚Äôs Senior Night game against Southwind. We are ranked 5th in the State in the most recent 6A football poll.

 Offensively, Senior Lincoln Pare has had a stand out season to date leading our offense with 1,825 yards and 22 touchdowns. A season highlight being the 363 yards rushing and 5 touchdown performance in a 56-28 win over Collierville earlier this year.

Fellow Senior quarterback Ethan Burns has thrown for over 1,200 yards with 12 touchdowns and Senior Grayson Hitt, who has committed to the University of Alabama for Baseball, has over 700 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns to balance the offense through the air. The offense is averaging just over 42 points per game.

On the other side of the ball, Senior Deion Harris has 10 sacks, while leading a defense holding opponents to 13 points per game.

HHS will host the first round of the playoffs on Friday, November 8 at 7:00pm

We won the Region 8AAA Championship 19th time in the last 20 years with a 6-1 win over Collierville and are making our 19th consecutive trip to the State Championship after a 5-0 win over Arlington in the Sectional Championship last weekend.


We are led by Senior All-American Maddie Eskin, who is graduating in December and will next be playing for the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Fellow senior captains include Molly Rose and Emma Gruggett anchor a team looking to win their 3rd consecutive State Championship for the first time in school history.
