Germantown, Tennessee—January 28th-- Germantown, TN— Kell Christie, the head of the theatre department at HHS, reached out to her friends at Theatre Memphis to work on a special project for her students. Theatre Memphis will be partnering with the Honors Acting II class to mentor and guide students through the design process of their upcoming spring musicals.
To provide roles for all of her talented students, while keeping them socially distanced and safe, Kell decided to do three musicals instead of one. The three musicals will be mainly run by theatre students who are split into five design teams, stage management, lighting, scenic design, sound, and costumes. Kell brought in a professional from Theatre Memphis for each of the teams. The experts meet through zoom with their team in breakout rooms to discuss and share everything there is to know about their area of design.
Although the pandemic has created some unruly challenges for theatre, it has presented new learning opportunities for these students with one-on-one mentoring. The hope for these students is to create a pipeline of internships for these high school students at Theatre Memphis, as well as having students complete design projects independently. GMSD and the theatre department at HHS are thrilled about this partnership in addition to the spring productions.
