Germantown, Tennessee—April 21st-- John Insley Traverse began working at Houston High School in 1999. In addition to mentoring thousands of students and providing incredible, thought-provoking instruction, Mr. Traverse also laid much of the groundwork that contributed to Houston High School’s growth in ACT scores. He was an asset to the school and will be dearly missed. At the board meeting this evening, the district celebrates his birthday with the awarding of his namesake memorial scholarship. The scholarship committee will present the recipient, Laura Smith, to the board. The HHS Circulation Library is also being dedicated to John Traverse “in recognition of a lifetime of commitment to the students and staff of Houston High School. Mr. Traverse chose to stay in the classroom, believing that there, he could have the greatest possible effect.” Making the presentations this evening; the Houston High School John Traverse Scholarship Committee (Andrea Cox, Michael Robinson, Valerie McKinney) and the HHS Administrative Team. HHS student Laura Smith, her family, and the Traverse family will also be in attendance.
