Germantown, Tennessee--February 12, 2021--This season, the boys' basketball team of Riverdale School has made a monumental comeback. Previous to this season, The Raiders had won half a dozen games over the past couple of years. This year, these young men found a new stride. The comeback kids went into the regional tournament as the 3 seed and pulled off impressive victories of their games in those state-level tournaments--something, according to new head coach Wes Crump, that was "unexpected".
"You would be amazed at how exciting these games were," said Crump. "This team rose up to the challenge time and time again, often defeating opponents in the last seconds of some of these games. To say that I am proud of what we've accomplished is an understatement".
The Raiders won the first round in the Regional tournament to West Collierville in OT and won the semifinals of Region against Appling, also in OT. The Raiders also played a strong game in the region finals but were ultimately defeated by Houston Middle School. "Houston Middle School had an incredible team this year," said Crump, "If we had to lose to anyone, I'm glad it was them".
Despite losing to Houston Middle School in the Regional finals, the top two teams still advanced to the sectional tournament which hosts Regional winners and runner-ups from schools in West Tennessee. In Sectionals, the Raiders beat Jackson Northeast. It was a close game but they again pulled off a last-minute victory, winning in the last 10 seconds of the game with a game-ending shot by 7thGrader Ethan Gatewood. The Raiders then advanced to the semi-finals of Sectional beating host school Brighton by 10. Riverdale was finally defeated in the Sectional finals by Houston Middle School. All in all a great finish to the season and the mark of a team that has just begun to come into its own.
