"I spent the last five year of my teaching career working alongside him, teaching AP Language. Critical thinking skills were at the heart of all his lessons, academic or life. These critical thinking skills had a major impact on so many people. John wanted to see those skilled put to good use, so he wished for HHS to give a scholarship each year to one student who stood out as an excellent writer and critical thinker. Laura Smith fits this description to a tee. I taught at AP Language last year, and I was blown away by her intelligence, poise, and writing ability. John was her AP Capstone Seminar teacher. He and I talked about Laura’s gifts on many occasions, and when the John Traverse Memorial Scholarship committee met this year, Laura was an easy student to choose. She has the ability to remove her own personal beliefs and look at complex situations through a thoughtful, yet unbiased lens. I am proud to call her a former student, and I know that John Traverse felt the same. He thought very highly of her and wanted to see her grow."
