Graduation Updates on May 26, 2020

Families of the Class of 2020,

Thank you for making our Cap and Gown Pick Up a safe and successful event earlier this month.  It makes us proud that our students were practicing social distancing, but still made the best of this situation.  Our staff also enjoyed watching the Virtual Graduation that aired on our original commencement date. amilies

Be sure this week to tune into Kix 106 to hear specific congratulatory messages for your seniors.  It’s also not too late to call 901-537-9131 and leave your 15-20 second message to air in these special broadcasts.  These messages will be played throughout the week and then live broadcast on FM 98.9 during our Senior Parade on Thursday.

Our staff is working hard to create a memorable and special Personalized Graduation Ceremony and Senior Parade on Thursday, May 28th.  Bellevue has announced that they will not be holding any public school graduation ceremonies this year.  Unfortunately, this means that Houston High School will be canceling our traditional graduation plans for June 18th.  The Shelby County Health Department has also advised against public gatherings, so hosting graduation ceremonies in June, even in our football stadium, is not a viable option at this time.

We thank the families of our graduates for their patience and flexibility, but at this time, Houston High School is considering our event on May 28th to function as the official graduation ceremony.  Due to this change, we are re-opening the registration and giving those of you who were holding out for a June date a chance to register.

We are working with top-notch vendors to provide a professional stage and rain cover so that Thursday’s events can go on rain or shine.  The ‘rain date’ for Friday, May 29th, will only be used if there is inclement weather that presents a danger to students.  We advise all graduates to bring an umbrella as they move from your vehicle to our covered stage.  The event will be live-streamed.  Please read about those details in the attachment to this email.  If you still need to register, please click here:  2020 HHS Personalized Graduation Ceremony Sign Up

If you have questions, or cannot locate your car tags which were both emailed digitally to registrants and also printed and stuffed into cap and gown bags, please reach out to [email protected].

We’d also like to remind all families of graduates that we will be practicing CDC recommended guidance during our celebration and encourage graduates to use hand sanitizer, and proper handwashing techniques when they return home.  We will ask that all families maintain six feet of distance between other parties and will remain in their cars when asked to do so.

Plans for our Senior Send-off Picnic on July 17th remain tentative, pending Shelby County Health Department Guidelines.  If the event cannot take place this summer, our staff will consider rescheduling when it is safe to do so.

The plant that prints our Yearbooks has reopened, and they are estimating a delivery date next week.  As soon as we have a confirmed date we will communicate that and a plan for pickup to parents and students.

Thank you,

HHS Administration
