GMSD Student Takes the National Prize in Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest

May 2023 – Congratulations are in order for fourth grade Farmington student, Esther Zhang! Esther was recently awarded the National Grand Prize for her art in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest for 2023.

This contest originated in the late 1950s/early 1960s, and it carries on as a tradition to this day. The goal of this contest is to continue to encourage kids to express their creativity while also promoting the reduce, reuse, and recycle mindset, as well as protecting trees and caring for land. Woodsy Owl was first introduced in 1971, and he challenges kids to “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land!” Esther’s poster was perfect in showcasing this message in a fun and creative way.

As a part of her prize, she’ll get to travel to Washington D.C. for the ceremony. This is the fourth national winner to come out of GMSD since the formation of the district! Click on the poster picture to view it in more detail, and congratulations Esther!
