September's Oustanding GMSD Employees
At the school board meeting last week, the Board and Central Office Staff were happy to recognize educators who are finding new and ingenious way to mitigate the minor issues that can occur with the implementation of new plans. 
Raising An Adult: The dangers of ‘helicopter parenting’ resonates with GMSD parents
Last Monday at Houston High School, parents poured into the auditorium for a very special event. Julie Lythcott-Haim, acclaimed author, stopped by Germantown on her nationwide book tour. 
FES hosts its annual student council elections
Fourth and fifth graders at Farmington Elementary School learned a valuable lesson in civic responsibility as they listened to campaign speeches orated by their classmates in preparation for a student council election. 
UT Knoxville Bus Tour Stops at Houston
University of Tennessee Chancellor Jimmy Cheek visited Houston high school Friday as part of an aggressive statewide push to make the Knoxville campus the first choice for Tennessee's most gifted students. UTK started their tour last Monday in Kingsport and ended it Friday, here, in Germantown. 
Student Spotlight: Par for the course
Since an early age, Jayna Choi, now a freshman at Houston High School, commanded attention for her prodigious golfing ability. 
GMSD Remembers 9/11
On September 11 last week, students across the Germantown Municipal School District joined one another in singing the National Anthem at noon—in a national initiative known as “Oh Say Can You Sing”. The program has been set forth as a way for schools to honor those who lost their lives in the World Trade Center Terrorist Attacks. 
Student Spotlight: Run to Live. Live to Run.
Fatima Jaber is your typical fifth grade student—if your typical definition of a fifth grader includes the ability to run a 7.25 minute mile.

A resounding thank you to our SSO’s for submitting their State and District required paperwork by the August 14, 2015 date. We would love to keep the positive momentum going as we move into a new school year. 
Farmington Elementary named a School of Excellence by the National PTA®
The National PTA® named Farmington Elementary School a 2015-2017 School of Excellence last week. The organization announced 124 schools and PTAs, representing 33 states and one Department of Defense school in Turkey. 
GMSD seeks input about school start times
We are looking for volunteers to serve on School Start Time Committees. Each committee, one for each school respectively, will be comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, and students. 
Student Spotlight: For those about to rock
HHS student, Alexander Buckley, has quite a unique outlook on life. “I’ve always chosen to have people donate to my charity of choice—every year since I turned three—for my birthday instead of giving me presents,” says Buckley.  
Become a Part of the Conversation
GMSD recently hosted A Germantown Community Conversation, an initiative to promote meaningful work for young people with developmental disabilities. 
Blended Learning 1:1 Pilot Program
A new initiative taken by the District will place three hundred fifty new computers into the hands of its students. Being referred to as 1:1, the pilot program will empower twenty classrooms across the district’s middle and high schools. 
Germantown Education Commission is seeking nominations for outstanding teachers
Help us celebrate our best and brightest teachers!  Each month the Germantown Education Commission honors one Germantown teacher.  Please take a moment to nominate your favorite teachers. 
Parental Curriculum Guides now available!
Parental curriculum guides are now available and updated to reflect all of the current textbooks/materials and standards. They can be used to support instruction at home, can be shared with tutors, or used to better understand what the children are learning during the day. 
GMSD named an Exemplary District by the State
Germantown Municipal Schools has been selected as one of twelve Exemplary Districts in the State.  Click here to find out why. 
Dogwood and Farmington Elementary Named State Reward Schools
Reward Schools are the top 5 percent of schools in the state for performance—as measured by overall student achievement levels—and/or the top 5 percent for year-over-year progress—as measured by school-wide value-added data. These 10 percent of schools receive recognition for their success under the accountability system.

Champion's Club

Attention GMSD community!! Here is your 1st opportunity to support your teachers.  We are starting our first Champion’s Club Campaign. 
Substitute Teachers
Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD) will be using Kelly Services as a contracted provider for substitute staff that include positions as: substitute classroom teacher, school nurses, sped/educational assistants, and school nutrition.
