Annual Senior Miss Pageant crowns its new victor
The Houston High School Chapter of DECA recently hosted the twenty-fourth annual Senior Miss Scholarship Pageant where fifteen girls took to the stage to vie for the coveted title. 
Germantown Municipal Schools each honor veterans in unique ways
Last week, Germantown Municipal Schools pulled out all the stops for our area veterans in a series of Veteran’s Day festivities. Veterans were encouraged to join in on the fun by enjoying the opportunity to attend their favorite event(s).

The level of talent found in the Art Department of Houston High School is astounding.  A relatively unknown fact--the department offers two chances for Germantown residents to purchase the impressive student work in two Winter fundraisers. 
The Fight to Find a Cure Just Got Personal
Join the HHS SGA in helping GMSD's own Allie Allen beat cancer by supporting St. Jude Children's Hospital.  They have organized an online auction that will run for seven days.  
SGA hosts West TN Leadership Conference
Student councils, student governments, and other student leadership teams from all over West TN gathered once again to attend this year’s West TN Leadership Conference. For the second consecutive year, Houston High School’s SGA hosted the event.  
Team Up For Math: A K-8 Look at Eureka and Springboard
Join us for an evening aimed at better understanding the new Eureka and Springboard math series; learn about the process for textbook selection, receive a background in what the program offers, take away parent resources, and experience a sampling of strategies.

Dark Fairytales Get a New Life From Visiting Author Adam Gidwitz
A best-selling author who specializes in the retelling of fairy tales has published several works on the topic: A Tale Dark and Grimm, In a Glass Grimmly, and The Grimm Conclusion. Based out of Brooklyn, NY, the engaging author stopped by Riverdale Elementary to perform, sign books, eat lunch with top readers, and conduct a writing workshop with 5th-8th graders.

Blue Chips: New teachers meet to discuss pressing issues
Being a new teacher is hard. But, a beginner teacher’s load can be lessened by a great support system. Shamira Davis, Professional Development and Evaluation Coordinator, along with Elissa Stratton, Director of Human Resources, arranged for the new teachers to participate in a unique professional development session during the school day. 
Big Read Art Contest Winners Announced
In a citywide event known as the Big Read, students from GMSD schools battled it out for top honors in an art contest based on the chosen book, The Wizard of Earth and Sea. Go Jim Go goes by Farmington Elementary and Riverdale Elementary
Go Jim Go is a 6-day telethon on wheels featuring Jim Jaggers, WREG News Channel 3 Meteorologist. Jim and the Go Jim Go Cycling Team ride 333 miles throughout the region raising money for Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Two of our five GMSD schools participated in the exciting event. 
At Farmington, a fourth grade class supports “John T” with their attention to Step Up For Down Syndrome
Mrs. Caryn Daugherty’s fourth grade class are participating in Step Up For Down Syndrome to support John T, a young adult who has been volunteering regularly in the classroom. 
Dogwood Elementary, at the top tier of philanthropy, continues to set its sights on helping the community

The Houston Band Takes Grand Championship in Dixie
The Houston Band takes another grand championship at Dixie Marching Band Championship over the weekend.

Houston High and Middle School Students have continued to “Rally for Allie” with many acts of kindness and generosity. Over the weekend, our very own Allie Allen has gone viral—thanks to the national blog, Mashable.com.

Mustang Wrestling Team For K-8 Students
Join the Mustang Wrestling team! They begin practicing for the 2015-2016 wrestling season at the end of October. Their program is open to boys grades K-8. 
12 Angry Jurors at Houston High School
Some plays are designed to whisk you away to a fantastical world, an alternate reality where folks spontaneously break into song. And then there are plays like 12 ANGRY JURORS, Houston High School’s fall production—an ultra-realistic fly-on-the-wall reality play. 
2015 Senior Capstone Projects Impress Local Community
This week our seniors will be presenting their capstone projects to the community. With topics ranging from optometry to the educational value of art—the projects are truly something to be celebrated. The community is invited to attend student led presentations that sum up their work.

At the school board meeting last week, the Board and Central Office Staff were happy to recognize educators who are finding new and ingenious way to mitigate the minor issues that can occur with the implementation of new plans.

Last Monday at Houston High School, parents poured into the auditorium for a very special event. Julie Lythcott-Haim, acclaimed author, stopped by Germantown on her nationwide book tour. 
FES hosts its annual student council elections
Fourth and fifth graders at Farmington Elementary School learned a valuable lesson in civic responsibility as they listened to campaign speeches orated by their classmates in preparation for a student council election. 
UT Knoxville Bus Tour Stops at Houston
University of Tennessee Chancellor Jimmy Cheek visited Houston high school Friday as part of an aggressive statewide push to make the Knoxville campus the first choice for Tennessee's most gifted students. UTK started their tour last Monday in Kingsport and ended it Friday, here, in Germantown.

Since an early age, Jayna Choi, now a freshman at Houston High School, commanded attention for her prodigious golfing ability. 
GMSD Remembers 9/11
On September 11 last week, students across the Germantown Municipal School District joined one another in singing the National Anthem at noon—in a national initiative known as “Oh Say Can You Sing”. The program has been set forth as a way for schools to honor those who lost their lives in the World Trade Center Terrorist Attacks.

Farmington Elementary named a School of Excellence by the National PTA®
The National PTA® named Farmington Elementary School a 2015-2017 School of Excellence last week. The organization announced 124 schools and PTAs, representing 33 states and one Department of Defense school in Turkey. 
GMSD seeks input about school start times
We are looking for volunteers to serve on School Start Time Committees. Each committee, one for each school respectively, will be comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, and students. 
Germantown Education Commission is seeking nominations for outstanding teachers
Help us celebrate our best and brightest teachers!  Each month the Germantown Education Commission honors one Germantown teacher.  Please take a moment to nominate your favorite teachers. 
Parental Curriculum Guides now available!
Parental curriculum guides are now available and updated to reflect all of the current textbooks/materials and standards. They can be used to support instruction at home, can be shared with tutors, or used to better understand what the children are learning during the day. 
GMSD named an Exemplary District by the State
Germantown Municipal Schools has been selected as one of twelve Exemplary Districts in the State.  Click here to find out why. 
Dogwood and Farmington Elementary Named State Reward Schools
Reward Schools are the top 5 percent of schools in the state for performance—as measured by overall student achievement levels—and/or the top 5 percent for year-over-year progress—as measured by school-wide value-added data. These 10 percent of schools receive recognition for their success under the accountability system.

Substitute Teachers
Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD) will be using Kelly Services as a contracted provider for substitute staff that include positions as: substitute classroom teacher, school nurses, sped/educational assistants, and school nutrition.
