Related Services
GMSD Speech and Language Pathologists primarily provide services to students in special education programs, but they also support students in general education who are struggling. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal law that governs special education and related services to all children with disabilities, including children with speech and communication disorders.
The goal of public-school speech-language pathology services is to remediate or improve a student’s communication disorder such that it does not interfere with or deter academic achievement and functional performance.
All GMSD Speech and Language Pathologists are professionally licensed and uphold ethical and professional standards. Each SLP holds a Master’s Degree and is accredited by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) with the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC).

The Occupational and Physical Therapy Department of the Germantown Municipal School District provides exceptional students with educationally based interventions for optimal access to their education. School-based occupational and physical therapists are part of the IEP team as a related service provider. As specialists in their fields, they assist students in participating in activities in a variety of settings throughout the school day.
GMSD OTs and PTs serve students in the following ways:
- Evaluation and Treatment
- Team Consultation and Collaboration
- Assistive Technology and Adaptive Equipment
- Fine and Gross Motor Development
- Sensory Processing
- Task and Environmental Modifications
All occupational and physical therapists in GMSD maintain all maintain licensure through Tennessee Health Related Boards and uphold ethical and professional standards. Additionally, all of GMSD's occupational and physical therapists complete on-going continuing education for evidenced based practices for quality treatment outcomes for students.
